WELLINGTON RACES.

(Per United Press Association). Wellington, July 11. The Wellington Racing Club were favored with magnificent weather for the opening day of their winter meeting, and the attendance for an off day was excellent, and prominent sportsmen from all parts of the colony v?ere present. The course was heavy, consequent upon the heavy rain of the preceding afternoon, but the racing generally was interesting, and keen finishes eventuated in several instances. Tee big race was robbed of interest by the accident to Slow Tom and Irish. The amount put through the macnine totalled £11,452, including £1385 on the double machine, as against £10,414 put through at the corresponding meeting last year. The five investors on the winning double, Steeple end Parliamentary, received £249 16s each. The results were:— Stewards' Handicap: Gawaia took the lead at the top of bend, and ran home an easy winner by three lengths. Dividends, £2 15s and £3 11s. Miramar Hack Handicap: Kudu 1, Togas 2, Wailethe 3. Dividends, £2 15s and £2 17s. First Hack Hurdles : Prospector 1, Black Renard 2, Asteroid 3. Dividends, £11 Us and £4 4s. Wellington Steeplechase : Kongoa 1, Mocassin 2, J'layfair 3. Ine field kept well together until at the six furlong post on the last time round, when Slow Tom, who was fencing splendidly, fell, and barely another furlong had been covered before Irish came to grief. Playfair ran off od nearing the straight, leaving Mocassin and Rongoa to fight out the issue. Rongoa had always the hest o the deal, and gained the honors by half a length. Dividend, £12 Bs. Parliamentary Handicap: Narcotic 1, Waikato 2, Maui 3. Dividends, £19 10s and £2 ss. Waiwetu Hurdles Handicap: Shrapnell 1, Exmoor 2, Monarque 3.
