AUCKLAND V. UNIVERSITY.

Received July 11, 8.23 plit. Sydney, July 11. The Kew 2ealanders played the University on the Oval, the Weather being fine and the attendance five thousand. Gledding and Young ptood out. Tue visitors showed improved condition compared, with their opening gam©} but failed to hold their own against the stronger combination which the University placed in the field. The result was largely due to want of combination in the back division whose play was somewhat ragged. The Aucklanders altered their formation, playiDg two five-eights and one wing foiward, instead of two wingers. In the opening stages of the game the locals had the better of tne game, Hughes securing the first try, but Wilkinson failed to convert. Shortly after Futter secured a try, Wilkinson adding the extra points. A long spell of even play followed, during which Melhone's right elbow was twisted, Harris taking his place. Later on Tyler punted to the open, and Smith followed rapidly, and securing the ball from the scrum, scored for Auckland. His shot at goal missed. Half time arrived when a fine dash was being made by Auckland, Tne scores were University eight, Auckland three. In the second half the visitors appeared to more advantage. They charged the University line, and kept the students hemmed in, hut ultimately a long kick by Rorke drove them back, but Seeling returned, and Harris followed rapidly, blocked Portuss' kick, and McGee gathering the ball fell across the line. Thence till the close each side attacked actively. Towards the close the students drove the visitors back. When the wiiistle went the scores stood—University 8, Auckland 6.
