AMUSEMENTS.

MISS LILIAN IRVINE'S CONCERT. The concert given in the Sohool of Music last evening by Miss Lilian Irvine, Mr Cyril Towsey, Herr Lemmer, and leading amateurs, was highly successful from a mucical point of view, and it is a matter for regret that there was not a larger audience, as a most enjoyable programme was submitted. Miss Lilian Irvine, who it will be remembered, sang with very considerable success at a recent Harmonic Sooiety'a concert, was in excellent roice, and met with the warm appreciation of the audience. Her voice, for one so young, is sweet and resonant, and she has a wide range. Her notes in tbe upper register are clear and full, and she sings with expression. With careful training, she should overcome any slight deficiencies that may be noticeable by those who pose, as oritics, and develop into a vocalist of the first order. Her numbers last evening were "The Lovely Spring" (Cowen), "Happy Bird" (Zarda), "The Cuckoo" (LisaLehmann), and Tosti'B "Good-Bye", for each of which she was encored, bowing her acknowledgements in responcse to the plaudits of the audience to tbe first item, and singing two of Guv de Hardlettz's songs "I Know a Lovely Garden," and "Three Green ■Bonnets" as encore items to the other numbers. In the concluding item as an encore she repeated tbe last a^rse. _ Altogether Miss Irvine achieved an undoubted success, and we hope that th9 possibilities betokened by her voice, will be fully realised

in the future.^ MrCyril Towsey contributed three pianoforte solos, "Adagio Fantasie in C" (Schubert), "Polonaise in C sharp minor," and Chopin's "Funeral March," widely diversified in theme, but ail played with brilliant technique, After each performance Mr.To.wse^, was recalled) and as an encoris.t'6 . his second number he played Greig's "Lyric Pieces Opus 43;" He also played the majority of the accompaniments with skill and good taste. Herr Lemmer (violin) and Miss Dora Judson (piano) gave an artistic intrepretation of Greig's "Son,ata in F Opus 3," and* were most warmly applauded, and Miss Driscoll'B rich contralto voice was heard to advantage in the braoketed numbers "Kashmiri" and "Less Than the Dust." Mr E. Richards sang with good effect "The King's Courier" (Pontet) arid. Mr E; Jackson's nuhlbers "Rebel's Song" (W. Wallace) and "A Bowl df Kdses" (R. C. Clarke) were wariiily applauded. Mr A. C. Magirinity, who was in excellent voice, sang "The Wanderer," his rendition being much appreciated;. . The. p'iano , used was a Halle upright grand, kindly lent by M r Iluffam,
