W?HSI~"PS solo horn played with fair 4ttie« *nd the sustained harmonies of the trtfm : . bonea at bar 15 and on were very pretty. The solo horn did good work. Though a little nervous in lento

bar. On tho whole, very laim played.— Allegro Moderato. Accents T)tpnerlv observed, and tho rep. very l#ctfv*6;ttbar.23. The solo cornet did fairly good wofk, . and lthe euphonium cadenza was Tefy well played, the movement on the Whole hem* very well rendered. Cantabile. —The accompaniments were out. of tune here, but the euphonium played his solo very fairly indoed. Ohe accompaniments were too heavy. On the whole very fairly played. ModeMo — Triplets indistinctly rendered at bar V, aW t&ere was not sufficient distinction between 1 .tf.and FF in this movement, winch wag played in rather a wild manner. . Tromttone solo —Trombone and. solo cornet much out of- tune at bars 12 and 13. Tho tone of trombone not quite satisfactory, should be broader in style. Accompaniments were too heavy, but on the whole the movement from bars 1 to 31 was fairly placed. Cantabile.— Basses too heavy, b'rtfitone played his solo very fairly, with nice tctoe.<. Accompaniments a little out of tun&. Allegretto movement very fairly i'endered. Larghetto.— Accompaniments slightly out of tune, and not together, and the tempo too quick. Solo baritone good work, and solo cornet played fairly, though tone just a little hard. Maestoso.— Horn out of tilfldj and not sufficient made of cfessendo at bats 5 and 6, nor sufficient distinction between P at bar 7 and M.F. at bar 9. Movement fairly rendered. Allegro vivace.— Melody comets not in tune, and tone rather coarse. Melody cornets much better from 24 and on. On the whole fairly "Well played. Points 87. Citizens' Band (Nelson).— Maestoso.—The attack was moderately good; but the tofle was ; slightly coarse, and not strictly in tune. Much out of tune at bars 12 and 10. Basses also much, out of tune at bar 17, and the band played in rather a wild manner. In the Larghetto the accompaniments were much out of tune, the sold horn being very faulty in intonation. Idea' correct as to the meaning of calando, and the movement was moderately played. In allegrb moderato the soprano did good work, and the band showed improvement. The solo B flat cornet did good work, but bar 22 and on were much out of tune. The stringondo was not observed, nor the crescendo at bar 31. The crescendo at letter D was fairly done, although the tone was course and somewhat out of tune. The euphonium cadenza was moderately well played, but the tone was hard and unmusical. In the cantabile the euphonium played very tamely, but the accompaniments were very fair here, though not strictly in tune, and not together at times. The movement, on the whole, was fairly rendered. Moderato. — B flat cornet very harsh at bar 9. The accompaniments should Jalso have been much shorter. Trombone solo. —The trombone wa9 faulty in third position, flat. The accompaniments were out of tune, and the solo was only moderately well played. Cantabile.—The solo cornet did good work from bar 10 on, and the baritone solo was fairly played as regards tone, though the stye was somewhat tame. Movement fairly rendered. Allegretto was not smart enough, and not well balanced. The baritones at bars 26 and 27 very nice. Taken as a whole the movement was well rendered. In the Larghetto the accompaniments were out of tune, and the first baritone was a little on the light side. Solo cornet played very nicely, indeed, but the baritone could only be heard from bar 10 on. The accompaniments, on the whole bßtter in tune. The cadenza at bar 22 was phrased wrongly by the cornet (in fact most of the cornets phrased this wrongly), but it was played very nicely notwithstanding, and with nice tone and expression. Maestoso. — He did not like the quality of the tone of the basses, being a little on the coarse side. The horn and basses were slightly out of tune, but the movement, nevertheless, was well managed. In the Allegro Vivace the over-blowing of the basses upset the balance altogether, but, on the whole it was nicely rendered. Taken as a whole it was a very creditable performance. Points— B6.
