THE RECENT BATHING FATALITY.

In some comments that have been made relative to the recent bnthing fatality an evident injustice has j been done. Mr Stewart, who dived | in 'and removed the body from the water, at once endeavored to restore animation. In reply to a question asked at the inquest, he said he had never had instruction in first aid, but that he had read the instructions given for treatment in such a case, and had acted in accordance therewith. Mr Stewart states, indeed, tbat on Dr. Andrew arriving on the scene he said, * ' You chaps are doing all ri-yht, only you are a little too fast." In this connection it may be well to state that whatever the method adopted to secure artificial repsi ration, the movements should be gentle, regularly, and perservingly .carried on at tbe rate of from ten to fifteen timeß in the minute— once in from s'x to four seconds. In the Nelson schools swimming is generally taught, and three-fourths of the boys attending the Central School can swim, although some of the boys are small, and at that school first aid is taught, the boys actually practising on one another. Atthe Girls' School, too, we understand that instruction is given. Artificial respiration should, if possible, be conducted in a warm atmosphere, and the application of heat, or vigorous friction is helpful. Recovery, however, is very rare after complete immersion for five minutes or more, but success has been met with in some cases after several hours work, though in others a medical man would be able to say that further effort was useless.
