Scene in a Court.— On Tuesday a domestic quarrel gave rise to a scene in the Gore Court. Blanche Russel had sued her husband, ' Captain" John Russell, for the maintenance of herself and her two children. Tbe defendant was in the box giving evidence, £and after describing the trials he had experienced upon the troublous sea of matrimony, he ventured the opinion of his wife that "she was no angel. " Mrs Russell, whose dignity was becoming visibly ! milled, said she did not pretend to be an angel, ' and gave her spouse a Roland for his Oliver by calling him "a liar." Her wrath continued to rise at a rapid rate, and she approached within a couple of yards of the "Captain," picked up an inkpot from the solicitor's table, and projected it at his head with considerable force, missing her mark by a few inches only. The ink splattered gushingly over part of the Magistrate's bench, and ornamented the walls behind the witness stand. When he had sufficiently recovered from the surprise induced by so unusual a spectacle, Mr Cruickshank, S.M., committed the indignant matron to the custody of the bailiff, and ordered that she be detained in the witness room until the rising of the Court. The application for maintenance was refused. Misadventure. — The matron of the Kumara (Westland) Hospital, writing to a friend in Auckland, gives the following account of a remarkable case:— 'We have bad a most wonderful patienfc admitted. An old woman of seventy fell over the face of o claim, a drop of 40ft to the tailings, on Wednesday night, and was not found uDtil Monday morning. Ie was raining the whole time — five nights and four days — except for one night, when it froze hard. She broke several ribs, and she is still alive to tell the tale; in fact she is on a fair road to recovery." Mills, in his capacity as Minister in charge of the Customs Department. The " occasion was the reception at Port Chalmers of some New Zealand troopers who took part in the South African war. An effusive individual on board the steamer returning to Dunedin exhibited great generosity in handing round a box of cigars. Mr Mills was prevailed on to take^a couple, but declined when the box came to him again. Bending confidentially down to the Minister's ear the hospitable one urged: "Take some, mon, take a dozen : 1 had the de'il's own job to get them through the Customs." Harford and Daly, merchant tailors, have commenced business in premises immediately over Huffam's Music Warehouse (side entrance). It is gratifying to know that the hop-growers are obtaining a fair price for hops this year, and had there been a little judicious combination among the growers the price would have been higher. But if they do not go in „ for the "Takeout" system, but purchase their Furniture and Household Goods at Lock's, they will be compensated to a great extent, for there is no doubt that Lock's have one of the finest stocks in the Colony, which is sold at less prices tnan at "Clearing Sales."
