I DEER. > To the Editor. [ Sir,— Apropos of the recent prose--1 cution for shooting deer. It appears * as if the owners of property are ' obliged to keep deer and stand by L and see the whole of their crops de- ' stroyed— in many cases their living ' for the year Jost without any redress. ' I speak from personal experience of " whole props being totally destroyed r through their agency* to say nothing of the grass they consume to the i detriment of the sheep farmer. If E not for the deer the back country 1 would carry a considerable lot more p sheep than is now possible. As far '' as I can see the deer are kept for the " gentry to shoot, who 'have no interest 3 in their keep; but think they have a " perfect right to go where they like, 1 and do what they please. Now, if 3 the Society wish to keep deer* .there J is plenty of bush land in different 1 districts. Let them fence, fall, and I grass it, then they will know what fc the suffering farmer has had to put 7 up with for the past 35 years finding ' grass for such pests. I would sug--1 gest that petitions be placed in all 3 centres for signature to present to I Paliament, praying that they should \ be thrown out as a perfect pest to 1 the districts infested, and continue ■ to petition until so declared. I hope 1 more able pens than mine will take 7 - the matter up, in common justice to " the recent victims a bold front is 1 urgently needed, and there is no 1 belter time than when the recent 1 case is fresh and warm. \ Yours etc., !
