(Per United Press Association. ) ENGLAND V. AUSTEALIA. SECOND TEST MATCH. WON BY~ENGLAND. Received Jan. 5, 9.32 p.m. Melbourne, January 5. There was wretched weather, and jhcwers all night and morning until soon had so soddened the wicket chat it was a quagmire. Fortunately it noon the sun broke throughthe iense clouds and dried the pitch sufficiently to eDable a start to be made at 3.10. Warner superintended the rolling of the wicket, or rather tnud, which caked on the roller, and a considerable quantity of sawdust was provided for the bowlers and batsmen. The attendance numbered slose on ten thousand during the afternoon. Trumble, bowling with the wind, took Knight with the second ball leg before. After Tyldesley failed to score off Howell, and Trumble stuck up Lilley, who was stumped by Kelly. The first run of the day was a leg-bye. Tyldesley then opened out, . but the outfield was very dead. The Lancashire man scored repeatedly off both bowlers, but eventually he fell to a very easy catch by Trumble with the score at 90. He played a great innings, and hit two fives and six fours, being in seventy-eight minutes. The others were quickly disposed of. The Australians' fielding was superb. England — 2nd Innings. Requiring 297 to win, Australia started their second innings smartly. Duff was easily caught in the slips. Hill scored rapidly off Rhodes, making ten in one over, but he_ was missed when he had scored eight. Afterwards he profited by the let-off, aa he hit two fours and one two off successive balls from Rhodes. With the score at 40, Braund badly missed Trumper off Hirst. Then Relf took one over to allow Hirst and Rhodes to change ends, which proved effective, as Hill hit one from Rhodeß to long-on, which was easily held by Relf. Noble was the .only other batsman to trouble the Englishmen, and scored 31, though he was badly missed by Tyldeßley at long-on when he had scored five. Rhodes' bowling was terribly destructive, and if the Englishmen had taken all the chances offered his would have been a marvellous analysis. Tyldesley and Rhodes by their batting and bowling won the match. Relf 0 for 5, England won by 186 runs. Received Jan. 5, 10.11 p.m. Melbourne, January 5. At an early hour this morning it was raining, with signs of continuing. Trumper not only saved a follow on by his brilliant innings on a glue-pot wicket, but got his runs with such great speed that they possess many times their^ proper value, and probably yery few innings equal his in merit on a sticky wicket. The i excitement during, the performance will not be forgotten for years.
