Opposite can be seen the northern terminus of the Southern Alps. These beautiful mountains, dark blue in the distance, capped here and therewith snowy peaks,- having on their picturesque slopes the great fruit districfe of Jiiwaka and Motueka, form a grand background to the calm, blue. waters of Tasman Bay. To the left can be seen the lovely Waimea Plains, the wooded Port Hills, and the beautiful gardens of Nelson nestled among the hills. Oo a summer's evening the most wonderful effects are obtained as the sun sets behind ■ the distant monntains. The whole sea becomes of a beautiful colour, striped with tints of red, orange, and. other beautiful colours reflected from the glowing sky, while porpoises and black fish may be saen gamboling near the chore.
