MILITARY EXHIBITION NELSON COLLEGE.

The combined military and gymnastic exhibition by the pupils of the Nelson College tDok place at the Boys' College grounds on Saturday afternoon, and despite the threatening appearance of the weather attracted a good attendance of spectators r including a large number of ladies. The demonstration, which was organised by Mr C. H. Broad, was very successful, and the various exhibitions were watched with keen interest and heartily applauded by those present. The proceedings opened with a spectacular military movement, executed by the full strength of the' two companies of the cadet corps, entitled a miliary maze. After the general salute, the two companies, one clad in blue uniforms and the other in khaki, formed into single me, and with fixed swords, went through a number of movements puch as marching diagonally, marching in circles, and counter marching. The movements were carried out very steadily, and with the colors alternating presented an effective sight, and was received with rounds of applause. A squad of cadets under Sergeant Rout then went through the physical drill, and the various exercises were executed with precision, and warmly applauded. A "tug-of-war between teams from the Cadets and the Old Boys' Cycle Corps followed, when the former in a few second 9 vanquished their opponents. The winning team consisted of Grace, Chisholm, Everett, Watts ii, Richmond i, Kempthorne, Couper i, Morrison, Collins, Sinclair, Hamilton ii, and Harley ii. A boxing contest between pairs chosen from the small boys, the juniors, and the seniors, was the next item on the programme, and the exhibitions of the noble art excited keen interest, two rounds being fought by each pair. The contestants were G. Hoare and A. Davey, K. Ross and J. Jennings, "Bridge and T. Sinclair, and H. Grace and G. Collins. The exhibition of club swinging by a squad consisting of Everett, Recce, Fitzgerald, Dawson, Collins, Ross, Scantlebury, McLean, Fair, and Beauchamp, was one of the prettiest features of the afternoon's display, the various movements being gracefully and skilfully performed. The same may be said of the dumb bell exercises, wnlcli followed, tne names of the performers being Everett, Harley, Peat, Perston, Skinner, TSkeet, Couper, Bridge, and Jennings ii., After a keen struggle, the next item, a tug-of-war between the day boys and boarders, resulted in a win for the former. The teams j were as follows:— Day boys: Grace, Chisholm, Kempthorne, Hamilton ii, Hamilton iii, Dolamore, Richmond, Wilson, Waters, Hunt, Maltby, and Rout. Boarders: Couper (2], Collins, Sinclair, Morison, Everett, Peat. Harley, Thomson, McLean, Watts i, and Crawford. A squad of pupils, consising of Everett, Harley, Morrison, Recce, Dawson, Fitzgerald, Bridge, Ross, Collins, Skinner, Sinclair, Terston, Jennings ii, Ogg, and Whitwell, and ledby Beauchamp and Murray, ex-pupils, then did a number of feats over the "horsa, " which were well received. Performances fon the parallel bars and horizontal bar followed, and .some very difficult acts were skilfully executed. Tho performers - were Beauchamp, Murray, Recce, Fitzgerald, Dawson, and Ross. The two first named were particularly brilliant. A tug-of-war between the boarders ,1 from the North and South Islands was won by the latter after a sharp struggle. The teams were:— South "Islanders: Watts, Everett, -< Collins,' Sinclair, Recce, Cook ii, Harley ii, Scantlebury, Ross, Jennings ii, Revington, and Dawson. Islanders : Morrison, "s Crawford, Couper" (2), Peat, Christophers, Bridge, Innes, Cutfield, McLean !* (2), Skinner. Twenty boys competed in the Novelty Race, which "was won byfSinclair, and the bayonet exercise, old style, recent style, and new style, was executed by squads under" Sergeant A. Hamilton, Sergeant Kempthorne, andUSergeant Harley respectively. The exercises were remarkably well done, and drew forth unstinted praise. The programme concluded about five o'clock with a sham fight between the two companies of cadets. During the afternoon an exhibition of rescue work under fire was.'given by the Nelson Cycle Corps. The Garrision Band very kindly "gave their services, and played a number of 'selections. Afternoon ? .tea was provided on the terrace, and opportunity was taken to inspect the College buildings, and the recent extensive additions.
