New Naval Base.
London, March 6. I Newspapers applaud the new naval \ base at St. Mary's Hope. The announcement was withheld until the purchase of the necessary land had been completed. Though the Berlin newspapers have declared that the creation of the British North Sea Squadron is a menace to Germany, they profess to regard the new naval base as only a step towards the completion of the English coast defences not affecting Germany^ naval position. . Received March 8, 5 p.m. _- March 7. 9 The Admiralty is acquiring thousands of acres on the north side of the Fkth 'of Forth as a new. naval base at. a cost of £100,000. The land acquired chiefly belongs to Lords Linlithgow^ and Rosebery. • . ■
