A FORGERY CASE.
At the Supreme Court at Blenheim on Thursday, John Harris Smith came up for" sentence in connection with charges of forgery and uttering false cheques, to which charges he pleaded guilty in the lower Court. The circumstances were that accused signed the name of John Haldane, of Takaka, to three cheques for sums totalling JBB, and on the 29th January obtained goods and cash therewith at three business places in Blenheim. ! His Honor (Mr Justice Denniston) said that a man could not be let off on probation in a case of forgery unless there were very special circumstanes. As far as the evidence before -him was concerned, accused was perfectly sane. If he was not sane he should be dealt with in some other way, and not allowed to go about at large making use of other people's bank accounts. The sentence would be six months' imprisonment, and if on medical enquiry it was found the prisoner was not in his right mind, prompt stops would be taken in the matter. The sentence would be concurrent on the three charges. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr McCal- - lum) intimated that two similar charges, issued at Nelson against accused, would be withdrawn. / -
