For some reason the points had not been shifted so as to switch the incoming train on to another line, and fche semaphore, which had stood at "Danger," was lowered so as to Indicate that the line was qlear. There were thus all the materials for a railway catastrophe on a large scale. Luckily, however, the driver of the incoming train was observing the regulations which requires drivers to enter a terminal station at a slow rate of speed, and as he was also keeping a sharp look out, he noticed that another train was in the way, and at once stopped the train, whlchj by the application of the Westinghouse brakes, he was enabled to do about fifty feet from the excursion train. An inquiry into the affair was held by two officials in the traffic branch of the department, and the matter it now under consideration by the Acting - Minister for Railways (Hon. 0. H. Mills}. In the meantime one of the officials alleged to be concerned in the affair, has been suspended.
