Received March 5, 12.53 a.m. Melbourne, March 4. Sir Edmund Barton states that he expected a notification of the termination of the Peninsular and Orient mail contracts. The British Postmaster, who acted on behalf of the parties interested, hoped to get a quicker service under a new Contract. Provision also would have to be made in accordance with the Australian Postal Act for the employment only of white labor on the steamers. He. believed this change would be effected without any great trouble.
