MOTUEKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Council meijthe other evening. Present: The Mayor, Crs Knapp, Satherley, Edwards, Simpson, Moffatt, Thorp, Trewavas, Eyder, and Grooby. The Council sat first as the I Domain Board. ' The balance, sheet of the Board was read, showing a credit balance of £b 17S Id. ■*.. Resolved, That three acres of 'ground (instead of two acres as be*fore agreed on) be ploughed and fenced, lessee to be informed by the Clerk of the Council's decision. The Council then sat as the Cemetery Committee; Cr Trewavas moved, That a mortuary chapel be erected at the Ceme- , tery. Cr Simpson moved as an amendment, That the matter be deferred until next meeting, the Committee to report as to the cost. — Carried. Resolved, That the contractors for the removal of the trees at the Cemetery be notified that they must complete their contract, and have all the trees removed off the Cemetery by November lafc or other arrangements will be made. BOROUGH BUSINESS. Accounts amounting to £57 15s 9d were paid for payment, [including £23 toward river protection. Resolved, That all outstanding accounts for dog tax be sued for. The Mayor reported that Crs Thorp, Simpson, and himself had waited upon a deputation of the "Waimea County Council, consisting of the Chairman" and the Engineer, and offered to contribute £50 towards the upkeep of the Motueka and Jubilee bridges, provided that the County Council contribute £50 towards the upkeep of the main road, but if anything happened of an extraordinary nature to the bridges the Borough Council would be prepared[to consider the queston of assisting the County Council. Resolved, That the Borough Council representatives be accorded hearty vote of thanks for their services. Resolved, That the expenses of the deputation be paid. Resolved, that public notice be given that persons allowing horses to run loose, and gallop upon the roads, will be prosecuted. Mr Bryant attended the Council's meeting by request, in "ordor tnat some dftfinito arrangement might be made re the gravel reserve in Highstreet, Motueka. The Mayor read the minutes of the late Road Board of December 4th, 1891, showing that the reserve was let to Mr Bryant for a term of 12 years, conditionally upon its being kept clear of gorse, and that he sow the land in grass. Resolved, that Mr Bryant be offered the use of the - reserve conditionally, upon keeping the land clear of gorse, the term to*be from year to year, the rate on the land for the last two years to be remitted, and no further rate be charged whilst so held, and the Council will strongly recommend that its successors renew the agreement with Mr Bryant for a further term of tive years from year to year, the Council however reserving the right to take gravel from the pit as required. Resolved,, that the|Clerk write explaining the whole position, and stating that as the circular re charging for these items in connection I with the work did not come to hand • until after the account was made up, it is now difficult to^finance the matter owing to the number of contribu- ; tors in connection with the works, but that th© Council will deduct the present value of shed and barrows from the account. The Mayor reported having granted permission to erect a verandah across the footpath in High-street, application having been made to him in consequence bf the work being in hand. His action was approved. Resolved. That application by builders be made to the Town Clerk wishing to erect verandahs, he being empowered to grant any request, subject to the regulations. Cr Edwards suggested that a certain drain at the Moutere end of the Borough be attended to, as properties were being flooded and the road injured The Council was of the opinion that the remedy was in the hands of the lando wners themselves. The Mayor stated that the road in that locality required repair. Resolved, That the road be repaired. ■ • Resolved, That £7 be drawn : for the purchase of birds heads and eggs (blackbirds and thrushes). Mr E. J. Boyce was appointed to purchase same, and receive 10 per cent. Resolved, That application be made to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on behalf of a respectable settler. Resolved, That the time has ar- [ rived for lighting High-street. His "Worship the Mayor stated that the late Mayor had been asked to leave a copy of his photograph in order that an enlarged copy might be obtained i for the Council Chamber. Mr Hursthouse had forwarded a splendid enlargement, now in the room. The Mayor moved and Cr Edwards seconded, That the portrait be accepted with hearty thanks.— -Carried unanimously. Resolved, That application be made to the Oddfellows for permission to hang the portrait in the hall.
