The Boers captured a patrol of 25 men at Paardekop on the 16th inst., and released them after stripping them of arms and ammunition. An Award for Gallantry. Lieutenant Langley, of South Australia, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry. Several pro-Boer meetings which were intended to be held in London have been cancelled, proprietors refusing to let their halls for such a purpose. Received June 28, 12.19 a.m. London, June 27. Major General Campbell's column has cleared the Harrismith, Bethlehem, and Spitzkop districts, and has captured great quantities of forage, grain, 2,650 horses, 2,500 cattle, and 22,000 sheep. The Late Lieut. Ryan. Christchurch, June 27. The following cable was received to-night by Mr Ryan, of Sydenham, father of the late Lieutenant Ryan: — "Lieutenant Ryan was killed j_ear Wakkerstroom. His troop went up a ravine to take waggons that were flying a white flag, but the enemy treacheri ously fired, whereupon he ordered his men to retire, but he retired last, and fell— a gallant soldier, mourned by all.— (Signed) Andrew, Major, Officer Commanding.
