Grief of the Maoris.
Wellington, January 22.
The following telegram has been received by Mr Ward, the Acting Premier, which was signed by the leading chiefs of the Arawa tribe : — " Deeply grieved to hear of serious illness of our sovereign Queen Victoria. We fervently hope that God, in his infinite mercy, will prolong her life."
[In Nelson the utmost concern is felt by a large section of the community, and the dominant feeling so far has been one of hope.]
