STEAMER CHARLES EDWARD.

! Afteb a most extensive overhaul, which has extended over eight months, the steamer ( Charles Edward will resume her running, and leaves for Wellington this evening. She has been lengthened by her stern being carried out a few feet, but the principal alteration has been the increasing of her carrying capacity, all space below deck being devoted to the same. She will carry fully 60 tons more than she formerly did.. Her main saloon, ladies' cabin, ard officers' quarters are all on deck under her large bridge, while her spacious forecastle affords excellent quarters for her crew. She has a new boiler, which will stand 1201bs pressure of steam. The latter was imported from Home, but was put together, fitted, and rivetted at the | Anchor Foundry. Besides her holds being enlarged, «he has been provided with two large ballast tanks. The alterations will make her far more suitable for the trade in which she is engaged, and she will be admirably suited for carrying large quantities of stock, The expense of her overhaul has been considerable, and has mostly gone in wages, which means a benefit to the workmen and the trade of tbe city.' The ironwork was exeouted at the Anchor Foundry, the carpentry was entrusted to Scott's estate, the painting to Mr J. P. Cooke, and [ the upholstering to Messrs Page& Sons, and ; the whole has been so creditably exeouted as to reflect credit upon all engaged in Bame. She leaves this evening in charge of Captain Wildman, her chief officer being Mr Watson (late of the s.s. Torea), and her chief engineer Mr J. Brown, who. is a son of Mr A. Brown, manager at the Anchor Foundry.
