(FBOSI OUB OWN COBBESPOXDEXT.) The timber industry is now progressing favorably, and the mills are all in full swing. The schooners Clyde and Emma Simms left this week with full cargoes, and the schooners Kestrel and Sock Lily are expected daily to load timber. The Parapara Hydraulic Sluicing Com* pan.y's operations are proceeding vigorously. Three nozzles are being used on the No. 1 Face, and a tremendous amount of dirt is being shifted. The elevator has been erected in the No. 2 Face, and as Eoon as the water is turned off in No. 1 for the purpose of cleaning the boxes, the elevator will be set in motion in the No. 2 Face. The influenza epidemic has reached here, and a number of persons are suffering from the malady. A Sale of Work under the auspices of the Ladies' Guild was held in the Public Hall on Thursday, the object being to raise funds for the purposs of painting St. Cuthbert's Church. Riley, and Miss Jtifey, aritt rt proved a great attraction, foi they had got together sitch an interesting Selection that would have done credit to a museum of much larger Intensions.. At intervals during the evening the following programme was presented:— Three action songs by some tnirty children, who nati been trained by Mrs K. T. Eiley J songs by Mr Jeffries, Miss King, Miss Giles, Miss A. Humphries, and Miss M ; Giles; recitations by Miss tfletthta and Mrs E. T. Biley , reading by Mr J. W. Hu'mpbvey ; pianoforte duet by Misses Hunter. The variorts items were much appreciated, • especially the action song 9by the children, and great credit is due to Mrs Eiley for the manner in which she had trained them, and to Mrs Fisher who acted as accompanist. The prizes in the Home Cooking competition •xere awarded as follows :— Bread, Mrs £?niraonds ; scones, Mrs McGrane ; fancy cakes arid sandwiches; Mrs F. Stevenson. The members of the Ladies' Guild are to lie congratulated on the success vfhich they achieved. The Bachelors' Ball came oft' in the Public Hall on Friday night, and was an imqualified success. The hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion with palm leaves, cabbage tree, lycopodium, clematis, flowers, and flags. The stage was fitted up as a card room, and everything was done to make the event a pleasant one. About two hundred invitations were issued, and about one hundred and eighty persons were present. The proceedings were opened with the grand march, and dancing was kept up with great spirit till five o'clock on Saturday morning. Mr J. Madden made it very efficient M.C., and the music supplied by Mi? KfiJOld Williams was all that oould be desired. The dresses of the ladies we're of varied hues and very becoming, and ihe scene oil the floor of the hall was a very brilliant ofle, The refreshments were provided by Mr F. Stallard, and were both good and plentiful. The Secretary, Mr S. Fittall; arid the members of the Committee Jfßve every reason to b* proud of the success which cro .tiled their effords* and are to be congratulated on their good management. Telephonic enmmunication between Collingwood and Bainham is now almost*an established fact, the poles having been erected and the wire stretched. At present there is some uncertainty as to where the office should be located at Bainham, but Mr Gannaway has arrived here, and he and the local postmaster are going out to Bainham to-day, when no doubt some central and convenient place will be chosen.
