EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board met at ten o'clock yesterday morning. Present: Messrs Talbot (chairman), Franklyn, Best, Bailie, rhillips,

The Committee appointed repdrtea upon the matter of Bank charges to School Committees ; that the Bank of New Zealand and the Union Bank (those interviewed) had decided not to make any charge to School Committees for keeping accounts. The Board's Committee appointedreported that they had arranged with the second lowest tenderer to complete the school at Millerton (Westport district). Correspondence was read, stating that this school, in its incomplete state, was blown down on Thursday night and demolished.

It was reso'ved that the Secretary proceed to Millerton, and, with Mr Bailie, arrange what his to be done; bcth aa to the site and the re-erection o! the school, and the Chairman, Messrs Lock arid Magirinity were deputed to' ratify any arrangement so made. •

It was also resolved to apply to the Government for the cost of this school out of the grant for schools in newly settled districts ; also to make reaewed application for the cost of removing the school and teacher's house at Caplestown. Mr Bailie reported that he had not been able to meet the Burnett's Pace Committee, therefore the consideration of the request for enlargement was deferred for a month, and it was agreed that Mr Ellis, while in the district, Visit this school with Mr Bailie. Upon Mr Miller's report, the Lower Motitere Committee were authorised to spend £3 on effecting repairs; The Education Department advised that £90 had been granted to replace the Pokororo School. One tender only was received for re-building this school, Mr A, Miller, £118 Us, and this was accepted. The Secretary reported that the land fenced at Kaituna was not the Board's property. The Secretary and Mr Bailie were deputed to interview the Westport Committee and report upon the room required for the high school. The Motupipi Committee's application regarding reserve was acceded to. Resolved to grant a sum not exceeding £7 to put iron on the old roof at Tadmor. Resolved to grant £2 10s for repairs at Charleston ; also an iron tank. The Denniston Committee applied for £18, board allowance for the teacher and his family for six weeks, consequent upon damage done to the house, Resolved to grant £6. Resolved that the Board grant £ for £ to an amount not exceeding £5 to the Suburban North Committee for lowering and levelling site at Hillside. Resolved that a sum not exceeding £2 be granted Merrijigs Committee for repairs to chimneys. Resolved to grant £5 to Brighton Committee for coal and shelter shed. An application for a shelter shed at Hope was postponed, Mr Best to visit and report in the meantime.

An application from Win's Valley for the enlargement of the School was postponed till after the Inspector's visit and report, The application of the Brightwater Committee for a chimney to the master's house was postponed for Mr Phillips' report. The application of Little Grey for a belfry and bell was not entertained. Mr R. K Cowles, Sherry, wrote that almost immediately after taking charge his salary, according to scale, had dropped from £100 to £72 per annum. — Resolved that the Board cannot alter its rules.

An application from Eeefton for new fence, &c, was postponed for the report of the Inspector or Mr Bailie and £6 granted for washhouse at teacher's house. The Foxhill Committee were granted the price of a colonial oven towards providing cooking convenience: The Stoke Committee were granted a sum not exceeding £5 for various works. Messrs Maginnity and Lock were deputed to examine -the Hampden Street school fence and report upon the Town Committee's application for- a new fence. The Town Committee called attention to the alleged insanitary state of the central room at Toi Toi Valley Girls' School. It was resolved that as many of the Board i as possible visit the school at nine o'clock this morning. Consideration of the question of painting the town schools was postponed, members in the meantime to see the buildings. Besolved to reply to the Baton Committee that small repaire for which a grant was asked were of a kind which should be borne out of the Committee's allowance, and that the Board, not having authorised them, cannot make any grant. The application of the Dovedale Com. mittee for a shed for the teacher was postponed for consideration for the Inspector's report. Four applications were received for the Lyell teachership, and the names of the following were forwarded to the Committee : Messrs W. E. Poole, James Wilson, and D. Forsyth. The Board then resumed, and confirmed resolutions passed in Committee. The Treasurer placed his statement of accounts as follows upon the table. Genebal Account.
