FEDERAL CONVENTION ELECTIONS.
Sydney, Maroh 5. Polling day for the Federal Convention elections was yesterday observed as a holiday. The elections passed off quietly throughout the colonies. The latest returns show that the following are the 10 leading candidates for New South Wales :— Mr E Barton, Q.C., Mr Carruthers (Minister of lands), Mr W McMillan (ex-Colonial Treasurer), Mr G H Reid (Premier), Mr J H Lyne (Leader of the Opposition), Mr JH Brunker (Colonial Secretary), Mv R E O'Connor, M.L.C. (ex-Minis-ter for Justice), Sir Joseph Abbott (Speaker), Mr Walker, and Mr B R Wise, the last two having replaced Mr Henry Copeland (exMinister of Lands), and Mr See (ex Colonial Treasurer). About 140 small returns are still to come in, but it is almost certain that there is little chance of Cardinal Manning being included among the 10. Melbourne, Bfaroh 5. The following ten will probably be elected : —The Premier (Sir Geo. Turner), Dr Quick, Mr A J Peacocok, (Chief Secretary), Mr I. A. Isaacs (Attorney-General), Mr Deakin, Mr Trenwith, Sir Graham Berry, Mr Fraser, Sir William Zeal, Mr Higgans.
