Secretary, (pro. t^m.) MR. F. G. NEWMAN. It is proposed to form this Company for the purpose of further developing and working the mine, which has been prospected for the past eleven months by the " Jenkins* Hill Prospecting Association." The mine is situated at the head of the Brook Street Valley, on the property of A. O'Brien, Esq., of . Enner Glynn, Nelson. The right has been secured of obtaining a lease for 50 years for mining for coal over the whole of the property (about 2000 acres) with the exception of the Homestead sections ; Mr O'Brien receiving by way of rent a royalty of 1/- per ton on all the marketable coal raised and sold. The promoters have already spent more than £500 in proving and working the mine. The prospecting drive which was first put in struck a vertical seam of coal within a few feet of the surface. This was followed into the hill for a distance of 162 feet, and a prospecting shaft was then sunk to test the depth of . coal. The shaft is now down 210 feet, and has carried coal nearly the whole of the way. The thickness of the seam has varied from two to ten feet, and the quality of the coal is steadily improving as the shaft descends. In order to facilitate the working of the shaft, an uprise of 87 feet to the surface has been made and a substantial horse- whim has been erected, which gives the necessary haulage power. The Association recently engaged the services of a practical Mining Expert, Mr. Joseph Taylor of Collingwood (late Certificated Teacher of Mining under the Government (English) Department of Science and Art, and Travelling Lecturer under the Staffordshire County Council, 1891-8), to inspect and report on the property, and his very favourable report is published " in extenso " as an appendix to this prospecius. From his report it will be seen that Mr. Taylor considers that the present drive and shaft have proved the existence of at least an acre of coal of an average thickness of three feet, and he estimates that this alone may be worked so as to give a net profit of £1,600. At the same time there is every reason to believe that the present seam extends much further than the present workings have gone, and further prospecting will probably prove the existence of other seams. In fact, several outcrops have already been found on different parts of the property. In order to commence working the mine profitably, however, and to continue the prospeoting, it i 3 absolutely necessary to sink a permanent working shaft. This involves an outlay beyond the means of the promoters, and they have therefore decided to enlarge the capital and form a Registered Company. That the promoters themselves have confidence in the future of the mine is proved by the fact that they have already applied for 500 shares in the new Company, and in earnest of their bana fides, they are asking in paid-up shares only the amount they have actually spent in developing the mine. Although the attention of the promoters has hitherto been directed almost solely to the coal deposits, it must not be forgotten that the fire clay which exists in large quantities alongside the coal should also prove very profitable to the Company. Mr Taylor considers that petroleum also may very possibly be met with when a greater depth has been reached in the shaft. In view of these faots, it should be noted that the agreement with Mr O'Brien, gives the Company the right of making arrangements for mining any other minerals as well as coal, should it be thpught desirable to do so. In view of the commercial and economic importance which the opening up of this Coal Mine is calculated to prove to the town, the promoters have confidence in placing this enterprise before the citizens of Nelson, believing, as they do, that this is one of the most legitimate investments ever put before this I community.
