ACCLMITEZATIOH SOCIBTT DIHOOBBKD.— Oor Brightwater correspondent writes :— Another oapitally aiteaded debate was held in Bt. Paul's Sunday School, Brightwitex on Wednesday evening. Mr B. Irrine opened the inbjeot that " AooHmitisatfon Societies have dons good in New Zealand," while Mr Albert J3ig?ar opposed. It was clearly shown on authoritative evidence that euoh Societies are not responsible lor many 80-called pests raahae sparrows, blackbixde, rabbits eto, while mneh good had been done, and ii Hill being done, by inttodaoing on to wtite lands, many oreatores whioh provide food and healthy sport for rich and poor alike. Mention was blbo made of oar rivers whioh teem with fish, of the introduction of lobitere of prawni, while the good work undertaken

by the Societies ia cbnierviiig our interesting native game and rare 'birds waa fully deal* with* The opposition? Brittle the utmost of the depredations Of deer and birds, bat their oiUße was obvioaßly weak and onpopu ar. , The manner ia which old farmers of 40 y*arg atandiog spoke op in favor of the good done j by insect-eating birds was a surprise to many. , Instinoes were given of orop3 ent : rely de- ( stroyed 30 years ago, in a* few days by grubs, , orioketß etc., One farmer explained the , position by saying that small birds take a ' little corn at seed time and harve-t, but thn inseots took the lot, A vote gave about 30 in favor of the work of the Societies and 7 against. Limelight Exhibition. — Last night Messrs Patterson and Fell were trying over fie slides to be shown this evening, and we are assured by Mr Fell that they are the most perfect slides that have yet been shown in Nelson, and exceed in beanty anything he has Been in the came line hereTofore. To use his own words "they are 8i m ply delightful, and I would notmifs seeiDg them for a very great deal." Mr Fell's judgment can well be relied np :>n, and be is as enthusiastic upon the choice of subjects as Upon the technical beauty of the slides. There are over a hundred of the Eng ish views. A Among the localities from which the aubjeots are drawn named by Mr Fell, we caught the names of the Tors, thef Dales, Ohatsworfh, Matlook, Ac. In addition there will be shown fifty slides from South' Amt 'alia, mos ly illustrating the Oity of Adelaide. Mr Fell Bays that if anything theee elides excel the EoglisbJotiea, The whole of the slides will have to leave Nelson, beicg passed on to the club next in tnrn to receive them, bo this will ba the only opportunity of viewing the Bplendid pictures. At the low prioe of admission, and upon the foregoing recommendation, it is safe to predict a large attendance at the Provincial Hall this evening. Commencing Business.— Misaaß Frank and Boss, la*e with A. W. Bain and Ci., annonnoe that they have entered into business as dressmakers in the rooms above the Auokland Clothing Company, Bridge street, where they will no doubt receive a fair measure of pablio support. Pbobatb.— Yesterday in Chambers before Mr H. W Robinson, Registrar of the (Supreme Court, on tbe motion of Mr Harley, Probate of the will of the late Mrs Elizabeth Bymona was granted to Arthur Bymons, David Hill Young and Charles Young, the executors named in the will. The Salvationists during self-denial week in Blenheim raised £40 10s notwithstanding bad times. PbomeHldh Gonoebt.— lt wi Ibe Been that the Stoke Orphanage Band will give a promenade conoert at a quarter to three on Sunday afternoon, at the Botanioal Reserve, when the programme of tbe concert given on September 22nd will be repeated, by the request of a number of citizens who were unable to attend on tbe latter date, owing to the visit to this port of the cable Bteamer. OratfßiiLows' Ball.— The annual ball in connection with the Mansion of Peace Lodge of Oddfellows will take place at Wakefieid this evening, when a large attendance ib expected. Outbagkous Conduct. — Yestarday afternoon, we learn, a young man went to a market garden in Upper Vanguard street, Toi Toi Valley, and whioh is cultivated by Chinamen, taking with him a horse He demanded of tha Chinamen the loan of their plough in order to plough up their young peas. Naturally the demand was refused, but tbe young man then attacked and knocked , down one of tbe Chinamen, after which he coolly walked his horse up and down the rows of vegetables. One of the Chinamen left with a view to obtain police assistance, but before his return the young man had left. Suoh outrageous oonduot requires punishment, for tbe lives and property of Chinamen muet be protected as carefully as the lives and property of Europeans. The Druids.— A speoial meeting of the Maitai Lodge will be held this evening, the object being to say farewell to Bro Barltrop, wLo is about to leave Nelson. There will doubtless be a lar^e attendance. The Nelson Rowing Club Minstrbls. — In our notice of the performance given by these minstrels we were unable to give the name of one of tbe gentlemen who appeare 1 in the concluding sketch. Mr D. Corrigan appeared as Baraum, and fully shared in the general success of the farce. Shooting — An interesting shooting match is to take place to-morrow afternoon, at the Mudflat range, between teams from the Wttimea Rifles and Naval Artillery. The former Bbould win oomfortably, the team comprising some splendid shooting men. The ranges are 200, 300, and 500 yards, seven shots at eaoh range. Ammunition will be provided on the range to the competitors, who are to appear in undress uniform. The Naval team is as under : — Lieuts. Watson and Barltrop ; P.O.'s Andrew, Nalder, Friend, and Hall ; Leading Seaman A. Johnson , Seamen R. Hunter, Sherwood, and Liley; emergency, Leading Seaman T. Johnson and Bugler Bradley. H. Battery. — The mounting of the Battery's Nordenfeldt gunß at the Drill Shed created quite a mild exoitement amongst the members of the Battery laet night. There were also g number of others present, who likewise evinced considerable interest. The mounting of the guns was superintended by the Battery's officers and Sergt. -Major Healy. The various parts, whioh are not a little complicated, ware put together with considerable ease, notwithstanding the fact that there were no instructions or diagrams issued with the guns. Captain Hyde provei himself an able supervisor, and principally under bis direction the work was oarried out. The members not engaged in the aotual mounting were busily engaged in cleaning the part*. Judging by tbe appearanoe of the guos, it would seem that they are absolutely new. Northumberland House. — The public are invited to inapeot tbe splendid assortment of spring and summer goods now being opened up at Northumberland House, opposite the Masonic Hotel.
