Valentine Vtrne, with several aliases, .has been sentenced to five jears penal servitude for obtaining money under false pretences from Wellington and Christchurch residents. The jury were unable to agree in the oase of three lads, Paul Weir, Oonroy, and Brown, charged with breaking and entering and a new trial has been ordered.

At the Supreme Oourt to-day Alfred Ward Nottingham, a youth of 18, pleaded guilty to having broken into tbe Burnham Industrial Sohool and stolen a couple of musical instruments. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment. George Fuller was found guilty of breaking into the shop of F. A. Oook and stealing a quantity of tobaoco and was sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment. George Peck, charged wiih bigamy, applied for an adjournment and filed an affidavit in support. His Honor said the affidavit was a plea that the aeeused conld not possibly commit bigamy here because he had previously committed it in Auckland. After some argument his Honor said that tbe accused would probably find himself with two indictments to meet in November ; however a remand to next sittiogs would ba granted. Bail was allowed. Benry Thomas fcr a breach of tbe Bankruptoy Act was sentenced to three montbs imprisonment. Jane Williams, oharged with larceny of a handbag oontaining jewellery was placed en probation for six months. Her daughter, a young girl was acquited on the same oharge. The only ease remaining on the calendar is a oharge ot perjury againet G. J. Bruce.
