THE HOLIDAY.
At this time of the year fine weather is not to be depended upon, and consequently, it may be safely Baid, fewer engagements are made before hand, for the spending of the holiday bo generally observed in honor of her Majesty than for any other of the popular holidays. Yesterday, however, the bright sunshine and cloudless sky, with scarcely a breath of wind induced most people to determine on seeking pleasure iv some of the beauty spots of the locality. In the early morning the H Battery and the Garrison Band paraded, and marched to Trafalgar street north, the Battery firing a royßl salute and the Band playing the National Anthem. The steamers Lady Barkly and Lily sailed for Motueka, but they carried fewer eioursionists than uaoal, and the paasangers by rail yeiterday morning were not very name* ous, though a considerable number, including sportsmen, went up country on the previous evening so that they might be about early. Those who drove out of town were numerous, and while the football match in Tiafa'gar
Park attracted lovers of the game, the several favorite holiday haunts in the vioiniiy of town were all fairly patronised. It may safely be Bffirmed that the Books and the Sands were visited by the largest numbers, for though tn obstruction or two precluded driving along the Rjcks road, this new causenay ronnd tbe base of the cliffs was much appreoiat dby pedestrians. On the hil'side beyond the Cliffs many picnio parties had camp fires and were boiling their kettle 3 , and tbe broad sands were dotted with people. Toe sir was wonderfully dear, and the sea, mountains, and hills presented a remarkably beautiful EC.ne. Everyone appeared to thoroughly enjoy tbe holiday, and it is satisfactory to add that we have heard of no mishap.
