OddFbllowbhip. — The Dunedin Distriot of Oddfellows has, we learn, suggested the boding of a Conference, whereat delegates from the several branches of the Manchester Unity ma? consider the desirability of providing uniform rates of cootiibations and benefits. At a Bpeoial meeting of tbe Management Committee of the Kelson Distriot, it I was decided to support the holding of each a Conference in Wellington, as being a central pace. Government District Medals.— Tbe firing for these medals, open to marksmen of 1894, commenced on the mndflat range on Saturn day. bnt owing to tbe number of Bhots to be 6red and the fading lißht, three marksmen were unable to complete the course. Tbe firing, therefore, of the looal portion of the Nelson district, will have to be continued tbi3 afternoon. Those to finish firing are Corporal Alport, ( orpotal J. Ching, and Gunner Hibberd. The Bhooting waa under the superintendence of Lieut. -Colonel Pitt. Nine marksmen were present, and of those wbo finißhedj Sergeant W. Borough, of the H Battery, Btands the highest with a sooie of 79, which is 10 points behind that of last years winner. Private Kenning topped last year's marksmen with 89, but on Saturday he only put on 74. Pr.vate Kenning left the second range with a creditable 61, but made 14 only at 600 yards, not averagirg outer?. Sergt. -Major Healy. who fired casually, registered a score of 79. Tbe Westport portion of the Nelson district have yet to fire, and the Bbooting is to be superintended by Cap tain Littlejoho. Tbe oondMons were : — Rangeß : 200 yds (stsnding), 3Uoyds (kneeing) and 600 yds (any military position) ; 10 shota at eaoh range. Those Tbophieb.— The belief that the trophies and championships in oonneotion with the Cricket Association were to be presented on Saturday evening, brought a number of crioketers from the country distriot, in anticipation thereof. When, however, it was announced that the trophies could not be presented owing to the neglect of two Secretaries to send in their Club's averages, a good deal of indignation was expressed. Moat cricketers regret that so much apathy should be displayed by the defaulting Clvb 1 , and consider that such negligence was not sufficient reason to justify the Association wi hholding tbe tropbies. The opinion advanoed was that the presentations should have been made to those Clubs wbo had shown interest enough in the trophies to send in their averages. Congregational Church. — it this Churoh last eyrnirg, the Bey E. C leaac delivered a very practical discourse on " popular amusementß, and their relation to Christianity." There was a large attendance, and a hope waa expressed by many that he might treat fnriher upon the sabjeot at an early period. The Tides.— We understand that Dr Hudson has consented to deliver a leoture at the Congregational Church on Wednesday evening next upon the working of " the tides." The subject is a very instructive one, and in the hands of Dr Hudson should piove highly instrnoiive. Football.— At the Park on Saturday afternoon a match took plaoe between teams from the Albert and Albion Clubs, resulting in a win for the latter by six points to three. The game was much faster than that of the preceding Saturday, and at times there was some capital open play by both teams. C. Moore scored in the first spell for tbe Alberts, after some of his usual dashing play, while in tbe seoond half Glover and Ingham soored tries for the Albions. The attempts at goal by the respective kickers were exceedingly poor. For tbe winners, Dee, McDonald, and Ingham (back), and J. Nesbitt, Glover, and Bright (forwards), were conspicuous, while on tbe losing side, Hall, Nesbitt, Moore (backs), and Hogg, Penney, Nalder, and H. Barnett appeared to advantage. Both teams lacked their full quota, and were made up of tbe usual scratch combination. It is to ba hoped the two games that have been played by the supposed senior teams is not to.be taken as a oriterion of what is to te preduced later on, otherwise the predictions of a good many, that tbe season is to be a " dead ' one, will be amply verified.— At the Botanical Eeserve the Pirate Club administered an eleven points defeat against the Nelson juniorß, Accident. — We learn that a young man named William Thomson had one hand rather badly crushed on Saturday whilst, moving some iron at the Anchor Foundry. Alarm of Fire.— Some consternation was caused on Saturday evening by the loud clang, ing of the firebtHs. Fortunately the occasion was no more serious than a burning chimney at the residence of Mr Louisson, in lower Bridge street. New Zealand Church Missiohaby Society. — The Gleaners Union in connection with this Society, the head quarters of which are at Nelson, will meet tomorrow evening, when papers relative to work in Palestine will be read. These meetings are in many ways advantageous, Bnd from an eduoational point of view they are decidedly valuable. Tbe meeting t .-morrow night will, we feel assured, prove very interesting. The Stokb Obphanage Band — This band gave an outdoor performance yesterday afternoon at Stoke, in tbe paddock of Mr G. Best, Dearly opposite the Anglioan Churoh. About 150 people assembled to listen to the music, and they evidently derived much pleasure from the selections, which were very creditably performed by the lads. The want of a nicely planted recreation ground at Stoke was remarked by many of those present. Mining Betubnb.— The following are the Beefton mining returns for tbe past week : - Heronles, 131»zs amalgam from 105 tons of stone ; Progress, 138oza amalgam from 215 tons: Globe, 90ozs emalgum from 110 tons.
