SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY,

On April 23 a very successful pnblio tea and mettiDg in connection with the above were hel*?. At the lat er Mr Thomas Pettit.the Superintendent, presided. After oDe of the special hymns bad been sung, Mr Heaton Ba'kT offered an appropriate prayer. The Chairman in his opening remarks referred to their missiDg tbe Eev. Thomaß Bray on that occasion, also to the death of Mrs Bray, who had always taken a deep interest in the Sunday school and young people. Four excellent reoitationß were given by Mies E. Chittenden, and Masters S. Webley, H. Kershaw, and W. Pettit. Another of the hymns was sung, Miss Chittenden sieging the solo well. A capital recitation in which information, poetry, and Scripture texts were brought in, was given by seven y ung ladies. One young lady treated upon the apple, a second upon the orange, a third upon the almond, a fourth upon the lemon, a fifth upon the date, a sixth upon the pear, and a seventh upon the fip. Misses Child, Wood, and Bartlet* and Master Kers 1 aw deserve oredit for the manner in which they took their several parts. After another hymn was sung the Rev C. Dallaston dislributed a number of prizes, and tbe Superintendent stated the prizesr for the soholars in. three olasses would be distributed next Sunday, as unavoidab'e circumstances prevented them being presented that evening. Mr Jeffreys gave an earnest address, urging all to hold fast the word of God, and to hold forth the same, not only by speeoh, but io tbe doings and dealings of their doily life. Eev Mr Padley, of Sydney, expressed his pleasure at being present, and complimented tbe scholars on their reciting and singing. He said he had come to Nelson on account of h ; s health, and the excellent climate had already benefited him much, and had nearly set him on his feet again. He gave lamentable instances of aged persons' ignorance of the Scriptures, and urged that honor should be paid to Sunday School teachers, seeing that nearly tbe whole religious training of the children was left in tbeic hands. They all knew, he said, that religious training was best done in the homes, but they also knew that it was not done in many homes, therefore honor BbouH be done to those who undertook the all important work. Rev C. Dallaston gave a splendid address to the parents, teachers, and children. Parents he considered should thank God for their children, who were precious gift?, and sunbeams sent into their homes, Every child, he said, was a bundle of possibilities, and he warned the parents that the possibilities would be for good or evil, and that if they wished their children well, they must themselves follow the safe path. The teachers, he emphasised, must take love, earnestness, and humility into their work. He urged upon the scholars to be ministering children, and like sunbeams to cheer up those around them, and particularly those in trouble Mr John Robertson moved, end Mr Walle Blick seconded, a vote of thinks to the Rev. 0. Dallaston for coming, and to the Wellington Baptist Chu'oh for allowing tha reverend gentleman to ocme to assist (hem in their anniversary. Tbe vote was carried by acclamation. jKev 0. DailastoD, in Bohnowledging the vote, oaid he hoped himself and other Wellington friends would Boon have the pleasure to come to Nelson to the opening of their new Baptist Ob.ur.oh. A vo!e of thanks was given to tha others who hacl taken part in the anniversary. Miss King ably presided at tbe organ, and tbe ringing of the children was excellent. The interesting celebration was brought to a dose about ten o'clock.
