THE HARMONIC SOCIETY'S CONCERT.
Thebe waß a foil attendance at the Provincial Hall on May Bth on the occasion of the Harmonic Sooiety'a concert. The programme was a miscellaneous one, and with tbe exception of the orchestral performance of Haydn's Military Symphony, with which the conceit opened, and whioh was most enjoyable, tbe first part waß of a somewha dismal nature, bat the viola eolo by Mr Balling, an adagio by Vienxtemps, which followed the internal, w;s a grett treat, abd Handel's Jubilate Deo, with whioh the concert terminated, was listened to with marked attention and evident pleasnre. Both oondnotor and performers are to be highly complimented on the excellent performance of Haydn's delightful Bmphony, and the rounds of applaDßG testified to the apprroiaticn of the andienoe. Then came two ohorutep, wiih oroheairal accompaniment, both by
Soh'Tjnnn — "Parting a^d Meetirg " a».d "Giphy Life,' 1 after whkb Mifcs hi Reavs PsiiK "I' nir t a w.mdrouti rapture be," by Franz Liszt, auri " Lcrelie," by the same composer, res.hlng rounds of applause. He r Billing's viola solo, in wfuch ha w.-is admirably accompauied by Mifs Melhu'sh, was snpercly played, and was appreciated s? it deserved. In the Jubilate the first chorus, " O be joyful in the Lord," went estremely well, end the tenor lead, " Serve the Lord with gladness," was taken wi h fine j effect, while the passage " And^ come before H» prestnod with a soup," as tendered by tbe chorus, supported by the oichetlra, was a grand oatbrrst of adoration. The dueti, •' Be ye sure" wac entrusted to Miss Feevaa and Mr Kidson, who e&ng admirably, and the a came the chorus " 0 go your May 'nto fctia gates." The terzetto was ctnitte'J, but 'ho final chort(S3S aided by tbe orchestra, were ex-.r-raely grand, the swelling sound of pr ' c be ng very finely rendered. > nose preseut must have felt their indebtedness to the bnciety and its talented conductor for havng afforded them au opportunity to herring this murio.
