Request for Reduction of Rent.
GfIBiaTCHOBOH, May 11. A meeting of twenty five settlers was held at Cheviot last night to consider the steps to be taken to obtain a reduction in the rent now paid. A resolution was carried that a committee be formed to draw np a Beries of resolutions, including a proposal that the Government be asked to remit next half year's rent. Mr D. Brick spoke at length against any motion to censure the Govern- j ment or injure it in tbe eyes of tbe ooantry, and he moved in effeot that it waa premature to arrive at any decision till it was ascertained what the Government intended to do with regard to the next half year's rent, and to find out whether it would give part of the £50,000 spent last year when tbe unemployed were foißted upon the settlers, or supplement it with £50,000 more to finish the raadß. The amendment was put and lost, and the original motion was carried without dissent
