THE ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF THE NELSON CAMERA CLUB.

This exhibition was opened in the Bishop's Schoolroom yesterday afternoon, and an inspection of the large number of photographs 1 that have been hung soon made it apparent that the present exhibition is in many respecte the be^t that has yet been held under the 1 auspices of this Club. Throughout the work 1 is good, and much of it is extremely good. 1 Some of the portraits are wonderfully excellent, the lighting being perfeot, and when il ; is considered that amateurs generally lack ' the advantages of a well designed studic wherein the light may be manipulated— 1 Bhut out and directed as desired — the success arrived at is the more remarkable Some of Mr Pitt's portraits would be hard to exoL-1. This gentleman shows some ver; good portraits, including five of his Hono Mr Justioe Eiohmond, ore of them a Bern brand t, and all displaying olever trea< meot. Some of his photogradhs o family groups are fu 1 of life, and i ! really wonderful pioture is his "Arch?i Walks of Twilight Groves and Shaduw Known," leally a photograph of a popla - grove, bat which at first glance !ooks to be ai interior of a stateiy rain. Hu » picture, " The Limpets," is no Ices remark able than good. & study of pampas praa - and pines is admirable, and excellent effecs were obtained by him in his pioture. afield, for be shows excellent pictures of L&kManapouri, Lake Te Anau, Cape Foulwim Quarry, a scene atFoxhill, the latter a platin otype, and H.M.S Lizard. His piotur " hafely Over," is a work of art, and hi Totara tree is a capital study. Kir Patterson shows a Bet of quarter plat snap shots and whole pate bromide enlarge ments therefrom, and the screen on whiol these are hung is a centre of attraction " Towing the Dingy," shows the small boa breasting the sea, and is a remarkably effeo tive photograph. Bib picture of the Lion Root Awaroa Lagoon, is very pretty, and hi "Danciflgf.n the Sands" is full of motion the curling surf ohasing the dancers Hehai some very fine olond effects, his turf scans ft Totaranui is extremely good, and his worl generally is wonderfully sharp, one piotun with vegetation in the foreground being moal noticeable in this respsot. Mr Nairn shows some capital prints from film negatives, and his exhibits are verj interesting, especially view? of English towni, One photograph, " Tetvkesbflry," is partior> larly, fine, and another of Oxford is aIBO veij good.- Waingongora is also a remarkable picture 1 . Mr Dovetail's collection includes two rerj pretty picnio scenes, and a hop garden, bat some of his subjects are less artistic. Mr R. Jackson shows some good pictures, and his portrait of " The Bride" ra admU> ab c. Bis pictures of the crew of the Madgs are likewise very good, and the views of " The Falls, Aniseed Valley " and the Miner Kiver are most interesting. Mr A. 2. Glasgow has evidently been doing: good work, His picture " Home," with two little girls and a hoise in- the meadow, front' ingthehouse is reallyfine, aad his view "Over the Sea "is also good. The copying of paintings is by no means a simple branch of tit* art, but his •• Maid of Athens" claims notice; and his small, quarter plat a photographs repay a close inspection. Mr Selfinders shows a capital picture of a» interior, and his "Tent at the Oliifs " bears; testimony of fee capital and judicious treatmeat the subject deceived. His views, each end of the Belgrove Torvnel, are good, and so is that of " Parihaka," while his '• Happy Valley Stream " calls especially for notice. Mr Startup occupies a screen with prints fey Mr Brusewitz from his own negatives, and the nagatives must be good to have produced sscb prints. His "Village Blacksmith" i» very good indeed, and his " Reflections "have been skilfully caught. " The Bullock Team in the Bush " by this gentleman ib a very pleasing picture Be shows a photograph of a fine nikau palm, and those of the cutter ' The Maid of Italy " and the ketob " The Comet are full of merit. His scene on tha Aorere river is a pretty picture, and bis r minificences of the Maori war are highly interesting. Mr Bruaewitz makes a good display, nofifl-^ by la portraits atu 1 . enlargements, white his int riors would bo bard to excel. He BBOWS one portrait, that of a lady, on opal that nai been skilfully tinted, and hie two bromide enlargements of tho Garrison B nd, photographed on the morning of the 24t&. of May lust, are vary good. He has a piowe of " The Swans in the Queen's Gardens," and a fine bromide enlargement o! a B^ene on tb.9 Wangamoa river. In adui ion to tho Nelson exhibits, th«ra are a great many from Auokland, Wellington, Chtistahutch and Dunedin, but we mast defer any particular reference to thefce. Great credit v due to Mr Patterson and those who assisted him in banging the exhibits, whiota are most interesting* Last night there was a large attendance at the Exhibition, when a great many transparencies were shown by means of the limelight and a capi al lantern manipulated by Mr Hoi and. Many of these slide- c->me from Christchurch, and others had been prepared by Mr F. Moore, of Ntlson. Needless to Bay the exhibit on was witnessed with very great interest, and the balk of the slides were very good The exhibition will remain open to-« day and on Monday, and should be very largely visited. This evening lantern slidei by Auckland photographers, and others by Mes.-rs Brusewitz, Lucas, and Symons, will be shown, while on Monday night transparencies by Mr Pitt and by Mr Patterson will be placed in front of the lantern. The Nels n Camera Clab is to he complimented on the excellence of the exhibition, and we trust that its efforts to afford pleasure to the public will be appreciated.
