Acclimatization Society.— A special meeting of the members of this Society will be held at the Courthouse this evening, at eight o'clock, when a full attendance is looked for. The Bishop or Christchdkch. —It was mentioned yesterday in the Churches hereafter named that the Eight Eev Bishop Julius, of Christchurch, will preach at the Nelson Cathedral next Sunday morning, and at All Saints Church in the evening of tho same day. Harmonic Society's The members of the Nelson Harmonic Society are intimated tbat the orohestra wil meet at the Harmonic Hall this evening at half past seven, and the chorus at quarter to eight, for a practice of the Oratorio— Samson— to be produced next week. A Dastardly Act —In Mr Cooksey's stables in Morrison street, there is an aperture in the end abutting on the street, which is generally left open for the purposes of ventilation. On Saturday last upon Mr Cooksey stabling his horses he found several square gin bottles on the horees 1 bedding, these having evidently been thrown through this aperture, so that had the horses lain down they must inevitably have lain on the bottles, and by crushing them would in all probabily have considerably lacerated themselves, and very likely have become unfit for work for ft considerable time.

Quoit Tournament. - A meeting of delegates from the various Quoit Clubs oE the district was held on Saturday last, in order to make arrangements for a tournament at which the various Clubs will compete for the handsome trophy prosCntod by Messrs Dodson and son. There were present tit the meeting Messrs Ecdpath and Ellis, of Be'grove ; Messrs Infield and Bennett, of the Prince Albert Club ; and Messrs Fletfc and Barltrop, of the Nelson Cub. Mr Redpath was voted to the chair. It was resolved that the trophy matches bo played on Tuesday, February 2, commencing punctually at half past ten in the morning, six players from each Club to form a team. It was further agreed thai all Clubs intending to enter a team must forward notice thereof to Mr Barltrop not later than 8 p.m on Wednesday, January 25, and that the rules of the Nelson Quoit Club be adhered to at the tournament. Each Club will pro vido its own scorers and referee, and the tournament will be decided by the number of games, and in the event of ties these will be decided by the points, If only three teams enter the game is to be 33 up, change at 10, and if four or more teams take part the games will be 25 up, change at 12. The matter of obtaining a neutral ground was left in the hands of the Nelson and Prince Albert Club delegates. Covet Pebsevebancs A.O.F.— The halfyearly summoned meeting of this Court wa3 held in the Old Schoolroom, Motutka, on Saturday evening last, when there was a good attendance of members, Bro. Wendelborn. C.8., presiding. The Auditors' report and balanoe sheet, which were laid before the meeting, showed that the Court funds have inoreased during the six months by upwards of £20, notwithstanding the fact that £68 11s lOd has been disbursed in siok pay and medical attendance. The Court has now 75 members. Bros. Gilbert and Duncan were elected as delegates to represent the Court at the ensning Disttiet meeting. The election of officers for the current term resulted as followa :— O.R., Bro. Moffatt; 5.0. R., Bro. King ; E.S., Bro. B. G. Spicer ; P.S., Bro. H, E. Gilbert; Treasurer, Bro. P. Quayle. The District officers paid an official visit to the Court, the D.C.R. and D.S.O.R. assisting in the initiation of a new member. A vote of thanks was accorded the District officers for their attendance. Sale of Jebsex Cattle, Stock &o. — The sale of milch cows, Jersey cattle, farm implea ments &c, whioh will be held at Drumduan, Wakapuaka, to-day by Messrs Sharp & Sons, will no doubt attract a large number of purchasers, the excellence of the stock of the late Mr Thos. Maokay having been well known. For tha convenience of intending purchasers conveyances will leave the rooms of the auctioneers at about 9 o'clock to-day. Sib F. Dillon Bell.— We regret to learn that a private letter has been received from Sir Francis Dillon Bell, in which he states that it is probable that he will be unable to vi3it Nelson nest week, on account of sicknes3 in hip family, which ia likely to detain him in Wellington. It is to be hoped that better tidings will be received before this week closes, and that Sir F. D Bell will yet be able to come. # Sir William Fox paid a visit to the Salvation Army Barraoks last night, when he -wag invited by the Captain to speak. Sir William, after stating tha! he was pleased to stand once more on a Nelson platform, and to see the people, proceeded to give an earnest Gospel address, which was listened to most attentively by the audience. Mining .Returns.— The following are the Eeefton mining returns for the past week : — Gallant, 161ozs amalgam from 120 tons of stone ; Globe, 200ozs from 190 ton 3 stone ; Alpine, 1990zs from 200 tons atone. Entertainments for Dr Barnardo's Homes.— We learn that the Rev W. J. Mayei'3, accompanied by eight musical little boys, will give two entertainments in the Provincial Hall on Thursday and Friday evenings nest on behalf of Dr Bamardo's homos for orphan and destitute children. The Eev W. J. Mayers and his party of lads aye accredited by a great number of celebrated Englishmen, including the Marquis of Lome, Canon Wilberforce, and many others, Sir William Fox states that the entertainment is a very good and interesting one. The boys play handbells, bagpipes, and other musioal instruments, and tha Rev W. J Mayers gives a very interesting account and shows views of Dr Bamardo's homes. In Auckland, a3 well as in other places in the North Island the Company drew large audiences, and we have no doubt the cause they have at heart will bo liberally supported in Nelson. Pjireno-Piiysioonoiit.— -Wo are informed that Professor Artemus Golledge, member of the British Phrenological Association, and who has commenced practice in Nelson at the old Masonic Hall buildings, has already been visited by a largo number of people, who bave appreciated his ability.
