BISHOPDALE SKETCHING CLUB.

A large number availed themselves of the privilege of inspecting the work of the members of this Club, exhibited at the Bishop's Schoolroom last evening. To those not intimately acquainted with the Club it is surprising the amount of good work shown on the screens. The rule has apparently been to chose some subject in still life, landscape, or some subject as " Alone," " Rest," etc, and for each member to take it in hand ; the result in the various modes of treatment, etc, is most interesting. Of course there are grades of merit, but the good work is paramount, and some is really excellent. The criticisms of a well known artist, which are attached to each work, should be of the greatest possible service to young students. On the walls we noticed the first prize water color (Auckland Society of Arts), a beautifully executed marine view, by Miss Nina Jones ; also a first prize oil color (Wellington), a view from above Stafford's, looking over the bay and taking in the ranges, the work of Mrs Topliss, and the artist has been very happy in her treatment. Some of the work of Miss Morgan, Miss Roehf or fc, and Colonel Bvanfill was also shown, and the Club can be assured that their action in exhibiting their work has been largely appreciated. — 'The Colonist,' Sept. 2nd.
