DEATHS OF OLD SETTLERS.

The • Marlborough Express ' of JJuly 6th, states : — Mr. John Godfrey. John Godfrey, of Picton, well-known in Marlborougb as a settler of 38 years standing, breathed his last at his residence, Picton, today. The deceased gentleman for many years took a prominent part in local politics, being more especially active in assisting to obtain Reparation of the present Marlborongh Prov:ncial District from the then Nelson District. Perhaps throughout Marlborough no .more self-reliant or independent man lived than the late John Godfrey. Of late years he occupied most of bis spare time iv the advocacy of Single Tax ss laid down by Henry George, and few men in the Colony so thoroughly understood the principles of " Progress and Poverty," as did the deceased. Painstaking almost to a fault in his explanation and advocacy of this ca^se he never lo3t an opportunity of acquiring adherents where possible. The dsceased was the son of the late Dr. Godfrey, and with hia brother Henry came to the Wairau, and oast in their lot as settlers in the Hew Zealand early daysMrs. Eekry Redwood. It is with fealings of the most profound regret that we chronicle the demise of Mrs Henry Redwood, which took place at her residence, Spring Greek, last night, at the advanced age of 81. Mrs Redwood arrived in this Colony early in the forties, having landed at Nelson from the same ship which brought her husband's father and family to New Zealand. The deceased lady was a widow when she arrived in this Colony, and a year or t»vo after her arrival married Mr Henry Redwood, 'who was then in business in the town of Neison. For many years she lived with her then young family in the Waimea district, where her husband was engaged in farming; and the reminiscences of her early days there, where she took no small part in the progress of the settlement, helped to a great extent to enliven her throughout her latter days, wheD she was no longer able to take her wonted and accustomed part in the everyday affairs of her household, having been confined to her room for fully two years prior to her death. About 1864 Mrs Henry Redwood came to the Wairau, and took up her.reaidence on the farm on which she lived till the day of her death ; and not a few of the settlers, in the Wairau and surrounding districts, of both sexes, who are now the heads of families, found employment on Mr Redwood's farm (then by far the largest one nnder cultivation by one man in the provincial districts of Nelson and Marlborough), and received both kind and praotioal instruction at her hands. To those who knew her longest and loved her best, her ever willing kindness will live ia the halls of an endearing memory. The deceased was the mother of three children, one daughter and two son?, and to them as well as to Mr Henry Redwood, ibe husband of the deceased, will be extended the universal sympathy of the settlers in this their hour of bereavement. Sudden Death. — On June 25th a well known individual, Win. Joseph Thomson, was foand dead in bed. It appears that he awoke about six o'clock in the morning, bat subseqnently appeared to fall off to sleep again, and after a time his wife got up, when a little later his appearance attracted her attention, and she t»em for Dr Hudson. The unfortunate man, however, was dead. It is not deemed necessary by the Coroner to hold an inquest, aB Thomson was known to be affliced with heart disease. Some years ago the deceased was in business in Nelson as a confectioner. He was 58 years of age.
