Forhsters' Social. — The members of the Ancient Order of Foresters and tbeir friends will spend a social evening at the Foresters l Hall this evening, when there will be dancing, singing, eta. No doubt there will be a large gathering, and a pleasant evening will be looked forward to. Lotal Howard Lodge. — At ths meeting of tbiß Lodge, to be held this evening, Bro. HuSam will deliver a short lecture on " Astronomy." All members of the Order are invited to attend. Cattle Sals. - At Messrs Bisley Bros and Go's cattle sale at Richmond, to-day, a fine pen of 2»tooth crossbed ewes will be brought under the hammer. Football.— A match will be played in the Botanioal Reserve this afternoon between a team ohosen from the various drapery and grocery employees and the College fifteen, play to start at half-past two. The following will represent the former; — Messrs Anslow, M'Donald, Gibbf, Cooper, Higgins, Watson, Condell, Dee, M'Artney, Stallard, Jackson, Good, Hill, Rodley, Lineham, Morley, Giblin Morton, Hall, Willeoeks, Snodgraes, and Reynolds. Bedell's Gas Govebnob. — Mr Butler, [the travelling agent for this gas economises has called upon us with some testimonials asti the efficaoy of th : s "gas governor." Oxi written by Mr J. W.;Joynt, M.A., Prinoipal of the Nelson College, should be of itself a sufficient recommendation. It reads a3 follows :— " I beg to certify that one of Bede'l'a patent gas governors has been in use here for some months, aud that, after careful caloution of the consumption for equal periods of time, the saving of gas has been found to amount to something over 25 per cant." Lkcidre on Heat. — On Monday evening Mr Lit tie John, M.A., delivered an exceedingly interesting lecture on Heat, and his experiments were watched with great Attention by the members of the Congregational Church Senior Guild. There was ft large attendance at the lecture, which was delivered in Sigley'a Hall, and the chair was ocoupied by Miss Newton, one of the Vice-Preßidents of the Guild. Resident Magistrate. — The Bench yeaterday was ocoupied by Mr H. Eyre Kenny, recently Resident Magistrate at Westpoit and adjacent centres, and who haa come here to relieve Mr Lowther Broadgduriog the period for which he has received leave of absence. Mr Kenny during his comparatively short residence at Westport won the high esteem of thesa amongst whom ha'performed his duties. Fbesbxterun Church.— lt Trill be seen by advertisement that tender* are invited for building the new Church, complete new plans having been prepared by Mr Heginbotham, which are highly spoke* of by those who have seen them. At « meeting of the Provisional Committee, in connection with the Church, held on Monday night, the Rev Mr Robb presiding, resolutions were unanimously carried to at once call for tenders ; also, npon the suggestion of the Chairman, who is Moderator for the District, it was agreed to take immediate steps to obtain a permanent minister for the Church. Mr Kobb in speaking said be was extremely pleased to see matters in such a forward and flourishing state, and he thought the congregation was now in a fit position to hare a permanent man, and he would make the preliminary arrangements necessary at once. Arrangements were then decided upon re borrowing a certain sum of money necessary for building the new ohurch, and several other matters were dia cussed. It was announced that a member of the Church had generously offered a new bell. A vote of thanks for presenting two hand* some collection bags to the Churoh was accorded the Misses Chiabolm. The N. Z. Amateur Rowing Association. — At the epecial meeting of this Association held at Wellington on Saturday last the applioai tion of the Wakatu Boating Club for the reinstatement bs an amateur of Mr G. Westrupp, one of its members, was agreed to unanimously.
