HARMONIC SOCIETY'S CONCERT.
Gounod's Mtjpse Solennelle was per. formed by the members of the Harmonic Society at their concert, given in the Provincial Hall, last evening, the programme also inolnding miscellaneous item 3 for the second part. The benches were not so well filled as usual, but Guonod's delightful music was a great treat, and the Mass was exceedingly well rendered, though in the choruses some of the piano passages were scarcely perfect, and the pronunciation waa not at all times free from fault in the prominence given the letter S. The trio running through the Eyrie and Gloria, and which is sweetly pretty, was admirably rendered by Mrs Adams, Mr Lucas, And the Rev. E. W. Ghatterton. The Credo was well taken, and the Offettory by the orchestra waa creditably performed. Mr Lucas sang the eolo passages in the Sanotus particularly well, and Mrs Adams was also heard to great advantage in the Agnus Dei, while the ohorus is to be highly complimented for the manner in whioh the members aoquitted themselves in the " Domine Salvam." After an interval the orchestra performed the overture to " Martha," Professor Zimmermann leading, in most admirably style, eliciting a very hearty encore. Professor Zimmermann then executed a violin solo, Sonate No. 1 (Correlli), and his masterly performance called forth another encore; In the song "At my Window," Miss Beeves, who was exceedingly well accompanied by Mr Maginnity, scored a great success, and waa compelled to return to the platform. In his saoond violin solo, by Wilhelmy, Pro lessor Zimmermann was heard to very great advantage, and he is also to be complimented on the manner in whioh he conducted. As pianiste Miaa Atkinson desetveß the utmost praise, and the members of the orchestra rendered very effioient service.
