The examination of the Bank pay-in slips revealed, the fact that cheques which had been received for rates were not credited in the cash-book. This system had been carried on from 1887 till the time of the late Treasurer's (Mr John Bourn's) death by drowning on the first of April last. The actual deficiency traoed amounts to £1529. The amount of rates levied outstanding according to the {books was £3184, tfnd of this £163 has during the investigations been traced as apparently deficietfbies, bringing total alleged defalcations up to £1692. The Board resolved to obtain legal advice on the matter. Mr Bonrke was also Town Clerk. and, deficiencies of £118 having been discovered, an investigation of the accounts has been authorised. Court to-day, John Ingram, licensee of the Provincial Hotel, was fined £20, declared disqualified to hold a license in future, and the license of the hotel forfeited, for his house to be the resort of prostitutes, and allowing them to remain longer than was necessary for them to procure refreshment. The evidence showed that the house was simply a brothel. WESTPORT. May 6. An elderly woman named Jane Brown, an old resident, was found dead in bed this afternoon. The total population of the Suburban Boroughs is 11,356 males, and 12,094 females; being an increase of 491 persons. . In the whole of the Census district, comprising Danedin and suburbs, Taieri, Peninsula, and part ctf Waikouaiti (South Waitake) Counties there is an increase cf j 1,303 persona since 1886.
