THE LICENSING QUESTION.
To the Editor of the Colonist. > Sib.— Permit me to give a word of warning to oar Temperance friends. They, appear to forget tbe_Licensing Act is one for regulating jipt ; apgr«sßtn^, tha liquor traffic. Whoever is elected on the Licensing Com.mittee,. I contend, is bound to deal with >Tr#rjr, application tor m Ucens9 on its merits; in accordance with the letter and spirit of the law. To go outside of the regulations of the liioensing .Act will render any Committee amenable to the civil conaeqnenoea. If a Committee closes any pnblic-bouse where all concerned . therewith have carried oat the regulations of the Licensing. Act and its amendments, then they may expect to become peMonftlly liable, not only to coats olmandamut, bat to damages for loss in basineas. The Law Court* muat protect those who fulfil .the requirements. of the Licensing Act, bb ihaiAct, as slated before, was passed for the regulation not suppression of tbat trade. Let oar Temperance friends take warning, and do nothing rash. Yours, &c, Legal,
