August 30. In tbe Supreme Court the dates of £rial were fixed for the oase of Atkinson v. The two latter will come before special juries. CfiRIaTCfitJRCH. August 30. The annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day, when Mr W. Eeece was elected Chairman for tbe ensuing year. Proposals for forming an Employers Association were considered in Committee) and were not adopted, but it was decided to appoint a Committee to confer with the Industrial and Agricultural and Pastoral Associations and others on the subject. Tbe Chamber approved of the proposed deviation of the Midland Railway route to eastward of Lake Btucner. Mr^Peokover proposed a motion deploring the action of merchants in boycotting a looal firm of grooers, but it was not seconded. The presentation of diplomas to the graduates ot Canterbury College took place yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large assembly, chiefly composed of ladies. Professor Cook presided, and gave an address, as did Bishop Julius and Mr 3. Hay. The proceedings were very orderly. The following students reoeived diplomas :—M.A.'s, Lilian Harriet Williams, Mary Jane McLean ; B A.'s Etrard Marian Anna Kruil, Agnes Elizabeth Tindall, Benjamin Samuel Bull, Thomas Richard Cresswell, Gurtis Crowther Plante. Robert M'Knight, head bailiff of the Resident Magistrate Couit, was found lying dead on the floor of his office at a quarfer to 12 today. He did not go home last night, and an under-bailiff named Friedman went to the office to look for him, and found him dead. The door was not locked, and there was a bottle of strychnine on the table. The deceased had evidently been dead some time, the body being cold and stiff. His health had been bad for sometime, and- be was in financial difficulties. He had been Resident Magistrate's Court bailiff for 19 years, and was previously sergeant in the Christchuroh police force, and had served in the Irish constabulary. A meeting of tbe Executive of the Canterbury and Midland Educational Institutes yesterday passed the following resolution, That it is the opinion of this meeting that a Union of teachers already exists under the name of the New Zealand Educational Institute, but that it is advisable that the platform of the Institute be modified so as to provide for the protection of the interests of teachers.
