FIRE AT THE MOUTERE.

On Wednesday last a seven-roomed house belonging te Mr Sehwass, and which steod at the foot of the Moutsre hills, on the road to Motueka, was destroyed by firs. Between eight and nine on that evening, Mr Windlebcrne, who lives about a quarter of a mile from the scene of the fire, observed the flames and at once went to Mr Sohwass' residsnee, which is tome 800 yards from the house

which was fJostrbyed, to ioform the owner. Mrs Schwass, whose husband'had been'a way frein home for about a week, then accompanied M* Windleborue to tbo fiiu but on their arrival it was impossible to do aiiithing to save the building, indeed by that time'the roof bad fallen in. The hou^e in question contained 7 rooms, it was built of wood, with shingle roof, and had a brick chimney. For six months past it had been unoccupied, but as ifc was not locked, anyone might have entered, though Mrs SoUvrasa Bays that no one was there the day on which the firo occurred, so far as she knew. We learn that Mr Lang, master of the Redwood's Valley school, passed the house at & quarter past aight.-and that he neither eaw nor smelt fire. Same of Mr Schroeder's children weve on the soeoe very shortly after the Bre started, and it would seem from what the children say that ths fire broke out upstairs. However, nothing very definite can be ascertained, and the origin is likely to remain a mystery.. The house was insured in the Colonial office for £50, and had been so insufed for about eight years. Mr Scbwass "estimates his loss at about £50 toyond the amount of the insurance. • .

I Bowling.—The bowling green presented a very lively appeatance on Saturday afternoon, the large attendance of members evidently showing that the game of bowls, of which bo little was known here until recently, has become very popular, but even apart from the game the surroundings are so attractive that we do not wonder at the Club ground becoming a favorite place ef reiori for members. One of the games played, which occasioned some interest, was between Messrs White, Wilson, Wix, and Winton and Messrs Lyell, Emgsley, Lightband, and Eev J. P. Kempthorne F< the result, after some olose play being a win for the latter team on the last head, when the score wa3 17 all, by 4 points. The same players, who appear to be very evenly matched, are to have a return game on Wednesday afternoon. The return match between sides chosen by the President and Vice-President, is to come off next Saturday afternoon, in which all members present at 3 o'clock will be included. The names of the pairs to compete for the President's prize bowls are posted in the Club pavillion. These have to be played off by the 28th February, when the names of the several winners will be again drawn. A system of handicapping has been adopted so as to give all the members a chance to compete as far as possible on equal terms.
