The election caused intense excitement, both sides being very confident. When it was known that Mr Ormond had won a most discreditably scene occurred, most filthy language being shouted by the supporters of Mr Itess. Mr Ormond mounted the balcony of Mayo's Empire Hotel to return thanks, when he was assailed not only by groans and hisses but stones, several persons on the balcony being hit, though not much hurt. One window was smashed by a stone, which narrowly shaved Mr Ormond's head, and he had to retiro without making himself heard. Afterwards other windows of tha Empire Hotel were.smashed, and the police had hard work to prevent a breach of the peace. Fifty Napier voters went on Saturday to Takapua to recruit votes in favor of Mr Baker. A party of Smithites were mustered from the surrounding districts to prevent the visitors polling before the first train to town. This becoming known, another party was organised to preveut the {poll being blocked, and they succeeded, though not without a lively scrimmage.
