ART EXHIBITION.

Tm exhibition of pictures was opened at wo o'clock on Easter Monday, and although h«rr were great counter attractions in external nature, yet it was attended by many on the first day, and every one expressed surpi iie at the number and character of the pictures shown. , They are by artists both living and deceased; a few of them in. active work in Nelson, and when the list of the Kelson artists or those exercising the art in Nelson is looked •Ter as represented here—Kelson will have no Deed to be ashamed. Far from it. Mr Gully was never better in open air sketches and studies for great piotttfos than he is here shown to bfl.by a selection from his portfolio of memoranda taken in the South of this Island.Lake Manapouri and To Anau. These hare never before been seen; in faor, the paper is scarcely dry from his sketching tour. The large picture which is to form the fist of the Art collection in Nelson has, travelled to Eugland and back, and has again and again bten looked at with satisfaction. We regret for our own'ysakesi that two large pictures by the game artist have gone to Melbourne, but those who have them are to be congratulated on their'acquisition'.. The very beautiful picture of .the South/ Bay, Kaikoura, by Mr Gully, belonging to the Bishop is on view, and universally^ admired ;i,we .almost hear . the rush of the backwater after the recoil of tLo wave, as the sandpiperjr seize their washed no prey here nnd.the^e-ampngst; the flotsam aid jetsam of'tbe eoiath easieri, irhlch have strewa the beach'with bbnes'.ol, whatefjand limbs of trees. She can copy, but she can also draw from this life, from the model, and from tho person evidently; her execution of a piece "of scroll work is seldom, if ever surpassed; it is not a drawing of plaster, but a drawing of light—light and not density seem to be evolved as you look at the drawing^ V '
