ACCIDENTS ON THE RACE COURSE.
Two accidents occurred on the racecourse on March 28, and we regret to learn that one is o£ a serioua nature. The first befel a boy named Alexander, who was ridiDg Mr Warren's Black Doctor in tie Handicap Hurdle Bace, which horse was well in the race, but came to grief at the hurdles just as the straight run was reached. Alexander fell clear of the horse, and as he was on his feet in a few seconds it was thought ho was unhurt. However, when he came to the saddling paddock it was found he could not raise his right arm, and Dr M'Carthy, of Hokitika, who was on the course' was immediately sought. The doctor, on examining the boy! found that his right shoulder was dislocated, and he at once reduced the dislocation. Later in the day Mr Twist, of the firm of Twist and Gay, met with a serious accident, which occurred in a very simple manner. He was standing upon a trap nearly opposite the grand stand talking with -Mr'and Mrs J. Bartlett, when a shout arose, " They're off." He immediately turned round, but in doing so lost his balance, and in falling evidently struck the back of bis neck against some object, probably a post on the course. As he lay unconscious the services of Dr M'Carthy. were again in requisition, and the doctor,, after examining Mr Twist, ordered) his; immediate-removal- to town. Later on Mr Twist was seen •by one or two medical men! and Dr M'Carthy also visited him with'the object of dbingiall'in hispower. About halfpast .11', Dr M'Carthy used the catheter, and Mr Twist' then' recovered-consciousness,' but the Dr states that he is suffering from cpn^ cusiion of the spine, and that the symptonis are: not- the smost favorable.
