NELSON INDUSTRIES.

NELSON IMPEOVEMENTS. ' (From ' New Zealand Industrial Gazette.') Nelson may be cited as an instance of the steady growth 'of the colony of !New Zealand. We are., at loss to 'understand why thedty and district should have gained the somewhat uncomplimentary nickname of " sleepy hollow," but must assert—after a recent visit—that the title is undeserved. A' walls:' through the city..convinced us that if its present state, could be called sleepy, its sleep' was certainly that of health and progress. We have : not the space to describe fully, all the im'prOvementb, that liayj?'; been ma.de rev 'ce'ntly in the town, but ■will only now give our readers some idea of.the; principal ones. In ■' w.alldng down Hardy Street, one notices .that Mr W. Boiit is erecting a handsome brick/ building, on the vacant ground by his I old premises, at a cost of £1400. On the ground floor of the new building' there will be a private office, with store; at back, while the second floor has ; been set apart principally for building societies' meetings, anclothe remaining^ space utilised for offices.. The ex-; terior of this fine building, will be of tuck-pointing-brick,, with f pilaster, enriched cornices, and other dressings in cement; the corner of building over principal entrance to be crowned with small pediment containing emblem ofl the Sun Insurance Co., for which Mr Bout is agent. Mr Moss Davis having purchased' Stanton's corner (corner of Hardy, and Trafalgar Streets),. intends to erect five large shops on the site, the chief feature being an ornamental cast iron verandah with glass roof, to extend all along the frontage in Trafalgar Street. Through the courtesy of 1 Messrs E. Buxton and Co., we were enabled to make a thorough inspection of their recent additions to premises in Trafalgar Street, and were, .pleased with the result. Messrs Buxton and Co., finding their old1 building too small for them, determined to " enlarge their borders" and build commodious warehouses at the back'of

fchoir' premises. Wo ■ can only say that the new buildings have given every satisfaction, and are a great convenience to the proprietors'. ■ Proceeding'aloiig'the street, we find that"the Bank of New South'Wales'are building large wooden premises at the corner of Bridge' Street. Visitor's'to .Nelson of scientific taste's will be glad t& hear that the authorities are "building- a" new' museum in place of the. two rooms jii the ( Institute formerly used for that purpose, and intend to use the . old rooms for a,public reading room.and library. The ..new museum will be built of wood, with stone foundations. Mr Somerville is the -architect. As some instances 'of' continued success in the way of manufactures, we wjll conclude our report by giving a short description of , Messrs Lock' BrosV recent additions to their already valuable plant, and an account of a visit toMessrs'& Griffin-Son's biscuitfactoiy —the latter extracted from the ' Nelson Colonist. 1 .We are. informed that the bone-dust manufactured by the first-mentioned firm, still continues to give great satisfaction, and their trade in this manure remains as brisk as ever. Messrs Lock Bros, have recently purchased an elaborate chaff-cutting machine (made by Messrs Andrew and Beaven, Christchurch) —the chief features about it. being -an ingenious arrangement for filling any number of bags with an equal quantity of chaff, and patent screens for sifting out small seeds, grit, and other rubbish so injurious to horses. Besides this valuable'purchase, Messrs Lock B'rJDJs. have added to their plant a. massive and powerful • hydraulic press for dumping hops,; 'flax, &c, and; thej contemplate receiving a considerable amount of work for it this year, thefe being only one other press of the kind in the Nelson District.
