CITY COUNCIL.

An ordunry meeting of this Council-was held last night, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), and Councillors Levien, Everett, Johns, Little, Greig, and Haiiey. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, payments were passed. Amongst the letters received and considered were the following :— Letter from Messrs Parkinson and Co., of London, having reference to meters ordered from them.—Referred to the Gas and Waterworks Committee.| Other letters relative to various orders from the Council were also read. Letter from Mrs Jervis stated that the notice sent her to remove gorse, and which was dated the 9th did not reach her till the 16th. She stated, however, that she had at once invited tenders for clearing her land, and the work had been commenced. Letter from Mr C. S. Cross asked when specifications for timber for the new Collingwood street bridge would be ready, as he wished to tender for same. The Surveyor said that tenders would not be called till the Winter. Letter from the Secretary to the Nelson Fire Brigade calling attention to the fact that the bell-tower in Waimea street was in a decayed and unsafe state. The Surveyor stated that the Brigade considered the Corporation should provide belltowers. He further stated that the Telegraph Department had given four telegraph poles as a contribution towards a new bell-tower, the cost of which, he said, would be about £30. f —The matter, after some discussion, was referred to the Surveyor that he might make enquiries as to whether the insurance com. panics would contribute towards the erection of the tower. Letter from the Secretary to the Education Board requested permission to connect a drain from the new school on the Haven road with a drain belonging to the Council. After discussion it was resolved that permission be granted to connect with the city drain, provided the same were made under the supervision of tbe Surveyor, and that no oloiat should be connooted therewith. The Publio Works Committee's report recommended that the water tables in the Wood should be cleared out, the work to be let by tender. Or Lrvien asked whether it was intended by this to remove all the vteed* between the footpaths and the oentre of the roads. The Surveyor said it was necessary to do thii, otherwiie the flow of surface water would be impeded.—The recommendation was then adopted, it being understood that the work should be divided in as many tenders as possible, with the view of affording employment to the greatest possible number. The Gas and Waterworks Committee reported that they had visited both the reservoir, &c, and gasworks, and found evsrythiug in a very satisfautory condition. They also reoomraended that an additional bench of three retorts should be erected at the gasworks, and this was adopted. The Surveyor's report; chiefly referred to the ditoh in Ngatiaraa street, as to which complaints had been made. He reported that the nuisance was caused by the drainage from the College. He said there was a cesspool in the College grounds, but there should be at least three, so that in passing from one to the other all solid matter would be deposited before the outlet into the ditch was reaohed. He also said that the cesspools should be erected aa near the high gum trees as possible in order that an iron pipe might be secured to them, and carried as high as possible with the view of carrying off all the noxious gasses which formed in such places. In order to,remedy the nuisance complained of he suggested that a fifteen inch drain be continued from the Waimea street sewer to Franklyn street, in order that this might receive not only the drainage from the College but that also from the Lunatic Asylum, which at present flowed into ditches, creating a considerable nuisance. In the report the Surveyor also pointed out that the consumption of gas sinoe the last reduction in price had increased much more than had been anticipated; and he stated that for the past six months there had been a profit over working expenses of £615 5s lOd. The report was received, and the Mayor commented upon the satisfactory state of the Gasworks Department, The Town Clerk wa,s then instructed to advertise inviting tenders for the supply of 550 dog collars and tickets. His Woeship reported that arrangments had been made to let the paddocks adjoining the Gasworks for twelve months. Or Hablky said it had been reported in Town that a Councillor standing for Mayor should resign the former office before nomination. He should like tv know whether this was necessary. . His Woeship said he did not think it was necessary, but that perhaps it would be as well for Cr Harley to tajje the advice of his solicitor. The Council then adjourned.
