Oamaeu, June 22

Yesterday, a widow uamed Quarrie, residing in Oamaru, died suddenly. After her death her oldest tfon, Daniel, disappeared and was not heard of till this morning, when he gave himself up to the police at Waiinate. A post-mortem examination was held ou the body, and a jury summoned i'ov the inquest, when the police applied for a remand till Monday, on the ground that the son Dauiel said he had been the cause of his mother's death. The doc or who made the postmortem said the deceased died from a fracture of the skull. The inquest was adjourned till Monday; meantime Daniel Quarrie will be brought down from Waimate. The affair has created a fearful sensation, as the Quarries have been residents here many years, and have always been highly respected. For some years Mrs. Quarrie has been addicted to drinking, and when in that state frequently irritated her son Daniel, who was always a quick-tempered boy. When he saw his mother in drink it annoyed him very much. He is only about twenty years of age, and has been engaged for some years with Mr. Lane, a butcher. New Plymouth, June 22. At Mr Courtney's cattle sale he sold sixtythree head of cattle. No evidence was brought forward to prove that defendants had not received a similar message, but judgment was given for £5 and costs. The defendants gave notice of an appeal.
