THE WRECK OP THE S.S. BRUCE—FURTHER PARTICULARS.
The Wellington Evening Post of 18th October hjs: —The following aie ike lurther particulars of the wreck of the Bruce : She left't'imaru at 6 o'clock on Tuesday evening and came at half speed; at elsren the weather became very thick, and at 2*40 en Saturday morning the Bruce stopped and took windings, finding between sixteen and seventeen fathoms of water. Captain Jones then decided to run about three miles and anchor until daylight, but withiu about ten minutes she struck- the rocks above her -water line. The engines were immediately reversed, but she would not go astern, when Captain Jones ran out a kedge, and got the best bower ready in hope 9of heaving her off next tide, but as the tide ebbed she began to list over to starboard. They landed the whole of the passengers, and she did not begin to make water until the tide ebbed, when she settled down on the rock, which fractured some of her plates on the starboard bow. and the fore compartment began to fill astern. Ultimately she listed over on the Btarboard side, and filled. Shortly after she atruck, Mr M'lnnesa, the engineer, got on shore, and communicated the accident to Captain Kelly at the pilot station, who immediately despatched a boat to the port. The Greelong proceeded dowu to render , any assistance she could. On Saturday afternoon the Union Company and insurance officers abandoned all hope of saving the Bruce, and the wreck was sold for £140. The Bruce was a new boat, having only itrived at Dunedin in August, 1874.
