MELBOURNE MARKETS.

The Argus of October 2, reports : —ln the import market, business generally shows little animation. Breadstuff's are very firm, and a better demand is reported for flour, and sales are making more freely at £11 ss. There are still brands offering at £11 2s 6d, but that ie we learn exception. Wheat is very scarce, and wanted. ' Prime Northern is saleable at 5a 9d to 5s 9|d j a^ these rates small parcels have been disposed of. Oals have been much quieter during the last day or two ; quotations 'for common to good feeding ertll range from 3a 8d to 3s lid. Maize is likewise the turn easier ; holders now do not quote over 4s lOd to 4s lid. Sugars are more noticed and sales are now making more freely. About 700 bags middling white Mauritius crystals have been quitted at £35. We also learn that refined sugars lave met with more attention, parcels of up to 100 tons in a line having been taken up. Under the hammer, 1145 bags ex Otago were offered, but only 684 bags were disposed of, at 28a 6d for medium counters and 31s 3d to 32b for grainy yellows ; the remainder was passed in for higher rates. Teaß are moving quietly. In the open market trade sales are making at Is 8d to Is lOd. By auction, 4456 pkgs congous ex Voni were cleared off at prices rising to Is. Candles are quieter, though we understand that inquiries for large lines for export are experienced, whi( h. it is anticipated will lead to business. A parcel of slightly faulty was dispoeed of for local use at 10£ d, and a small lot of damaged and badly broken was quitted publicly at 9|d net, a very full price condition considered. Trade »ales of Tasmanian hops are mentioned at Is lid to 2s for fair samples. Private telegrams having been received from London advising an advance af 2d per gallon on kerosine oil, there baß been some excitement in the market. Sales to the extent of 12,000 cases have been traced, but a good deal more is stated to have changed hands. We hear of positive sales to-day of Devoe's to the extent of •everal thousand cases in parcels at 15d, and even 15£ dj B said to have been realised. Diamond oil has also teen sold, though not at such an improved figure 5 Ib, l^d only has yet been paid for that brand. In liquids, gales of Hennessy's pale brandy are reported »t7a9d.
