EXPLORATION IN PALESTINE,

Late accounts show that the attack made upon the English exploration party in Palestine was of a serious nature. It occurred at tSafed (not Acre) six or seven miles northwest of the Lake of Galilee, on Saturday, July 10. There were fifteen in the English party; the assault was unprovoked, but, says the Secretary of the Exploration Society, "was of a very severe character, and appears to have arrieen simply from the fact that the party were Christians." Sticks, stones, clubs, big knives, and firearms were used by the Mohammedans. The English were unarmed. The fight lasted half an hour, and was terminated by the arrival of some Turkish soldiers, with the English Consular Agent. Lieut. Conder was severely wounded on the head and neck; Lieut. Kitchener was bruised on the thigh and arm, and the Arab servants showed the marks of the blows from stones and [sticks. Pull accounts of the assault were sent by Lieut. Conder to the British Consul-General at Beyrout. Measures have been taken to arreßt and punish the assailants.
