[We are not responsible for the opinions expressed by our Correspondents. We cannot accept anonymous communications."] (To the Editor of the Colonist.) g lE? —Current rumor has ifc that the Corporation intends to dismiss the present Manager of the Gas AVorks. Can you inform roe it this is correct ? If it is, I should like to ascertain upon what basis the powers that be proceed, when they dispense with the services of a thoroughly practical man, who has more than once stood in the gap caused by the inefficiency of the gas management, and given light to the town when darkness threatened the gas customers of the City Council ? It is rumored, too, that he is to be supplanted by a manager who has yefe to be taught the art of making gas, and to be instructed in the management of the works. I do not avouch for the truth of these rumors ; but if they are correct, a gross mii justice is. being done to the present manager, , who has given practical proof of his ability to keep the gas consumers supplied with light; and also,to the public, who have already suffered sufficiently from the previous mismanagement of the works. We have had one incompetent manager at a high salary, who left the:town in darkness when light was most wanted by business people, and Mr JLowrie was the forlorn hope whe saved the town from a total gas eclipse. It would be well for the public to know what special recommendation and what superioi ■ abilities the new manager is able to show as a reason for his being put in the place of a i thoroughly competent and practical man.— . I am, &c, , A Gas Consfmee. Nelson, October 12, 1875. [Although Mr Lightfoot has been ap- ' pointed burveyer and general overseer oi all works in charge of the Corporation, w( t cannot think that it is the intention of -the 1 Corporation or the. Surveyor to interfere with Mr Lowrie, ov his duties. —Ed 1 -Colonist."]
