LET THERE BE LIGHT

Dubing the last month the citizens of Nellon have suffered from the want of light. The gas has often not been burning at all, and when it did burn it generally emitted such an offensive smell that consumers were glad to extinguish it. Private citizens have Buffered quite enough by the want of light, kt shopkeepers and publicans have been the particular victims. Things have now come to a crisis, and the public call loudly on the City Council, who have the management of the Gasworks, to do their duty and put an end to the present unsatisfactory state of things. h Friday evening the gas went out when iwas most wanted, and on Saturday there Jas none at all, the consequence being that ! one of our tradesmen is said to have lost nearly £50. We have said this is unsatisfactory, but it is worse—it is simply shameful. Here we are in a city containing 6000 inhabitants, with every appliance for making gas lat hand, and yet the streets are in utter } darkness, and shopkeepers cannot carry on their business. We do not know who is to Name, but if anybody is, it is the City Council. Let them attend to their duties, Wmake way for others who will do so. The first story we heard about the sudden darkness was that the retorts were bad; the fiecond, that the manager did not understand toe manufacture of gas. Now, however, new retorts have been obtained, and yet we afein the same predicament. It is quite fee that some action should betaken in the matter. The people pay a high price for their gas; then what is the use of playing *ith them? Let the Council either give ub ?as, or say they will not do so, and then we 'nail know what to do. They may go about ">b matter in any way they like, but the cry ,f an indignant people is, " Let us have light!" [since the above was in type the Council "We temporarily engaged a man to make gas.] ■ ■ •
